Now is a perfect time to plant some evergreen trees. These trees go dormant in the late fall in preparation for winter. This means that they will require less sunlight and other care. Because of the dormancy of the trees, planting them now will be less stressful than planting these trees during the summer or late spring. Plentiful fall rains will also help the newly planted evergreen trees.
Once your trees are already planted, you’ll want to take proper care of them. Fertilizing may or may not be necessary in subsequent years after planting. This will depend on your soil. The best thing to do is to take a soil sample from around your evergreen trees and have the soil analyzed. This will give you a good idea on whether or not the fertilizer is needed.
Mulching is a good idea until the frost. Damp, mulched soil is less likely to heave or freeze dry, conditions that are not the best for your evergreen trees.
Young trees will need some support as they grow, especially if they are subject to high winds. You do want to stake the young trees loosely, and do not use cord, wire or hose. Your best bet for support is short stakes and webbing straps.
An evergreen tree can take about 10 years before it reaches nine feet, generally a good size for most landscapes. Along the way, the tree will need to be pruned in order to correct its growth and keep it shaped nicely. In most cases, you can prune any time of the year, whether the tree is dormant or not, although pruning it now should stimulate in vigorous growth in the spring. Check with your local nursery to determine if your particular tree should be pruned at a certain time in order to have new growth cover old pruning wounds, for example.
