A deck is an attractive addition to any home and yard. When cared for properly, it looks great and provides a nice outdoor space for visiting, eating, or just relaxing.
Keep Your Deck Clean
A clean deck will last much longer. Sweep away debris and wash your deck occasionally. You can use plain water or add a bit of detergent, and there are also specialized cleaners for decks and other wooden elements. When you’re finished cleaning and rinsing your deck thoroughly sweep away excess water with a clean broom. It’s not good to leave standing water of the deck’s surface. Try to wash your deck early in the day so it has plenty of time to dry in the sun.
Move Items on the Deck Regularly
If you have a welcome mat on the deck in front of your door, it is important to move it from time to time. Moisture and dirt get trapped underneath welcome mats and this can cause damage to the wood. Pick the mat up and clean this area as well as the mat, allowing both to air dry before putting the mat back in place. Do the same with any other items on your deck, such as a cooler or crate of yard toys.
Treat Mold or Mildew Immediately
Discolored areas on your deck could mean mold or mildew. If you’re not sure, have the area tested or go ahead and treat for these problems. A simple scrubbing with a bleach based cleaner should do the trick. Rinse thoroughly.
Protect the Surface of Your Deck
Apply a good water seal treatment to your deck after cleaning. This will help protect the wood and keep it looking great longer. It will help prevent mold, mildew, and rot by causing water to bead and roll off rather than soaking in. You can also use a protective stain.
