Carnival of Educators -Drama Club Edition

Welcome to the November 17, 2009 edition of carnival of educators. This is the fourth edition of the Carnival of Educators. For those new to carnivals, they are basically blog or column posts that include links to tidbits from dozens of other carnivals. Each week the carnival is hosted at a different blog to spread the wealth and the work around.

This weeks edition is the Drama Club edition. In the past two weeks, I have been to numerous homeschool and school productions, and my own kids are in the middle of Tech week for a play scheduled for five shows this weekend. I am glad to be able to host this week’s carnival at the Families.com Homeschool blog.

As a stage mom, and someone who has worked as the Drama Mama, I know there there are many aspects and jobs that go into putting on a production. Sometimes drama is all preparation and work. Othertimes, there is more drama than need be. Likewise there are many aspects of educating children. With that said, here follows this week’s carnival of educators.

Planning

Before a production is put on, directors and producers pour through scripts to find the right play for the group. They must consider Appropriateness, Venue, and Ability the group to pull off the characters. In a educational evironment, curriculum planning goes through the same process. Here are some options for curriculum that educators may want to explore.

Preparation

Just as a Drama club director spends time teaching students the craft of acting before ever showing them the script, educators must make sure students are able to learn the material they are about to present. Here are some preparation tools for students and educators.

While many my try to take shortcuts, it is up to those in charge to ensure that students learn the real lessons… the hard way if necessary.

Polishing

As the rehearsal time period comes to a close, it is time to fine tune the characters and production. The same goes for students in their latter years. You must get the student to take ownership of their role.

Production

The outcome of a good Drama Club effort is a top notch production. The outcome of effective eduction is a successful student.

Fun

Students don’t join Drama Club because they are excited about hard work. They join because they expect to have fun. Keeping the process of learning fun is key in Drama Clubs and education. Here is some humor to send you on your way.

Growth

Whether in Drama Club or overall education, the student must emerge forever changed and preferably improved. Here are some blogs that speak to growth and change in education.

Sarah Ebner, School Gate presentsA teacher asks: what can we do about education? Is the solution more pay for teachers? More grammar schools? Corporal punishment? What do you think? posted at School Gate – Times Online – WBLG, saying, “A teacher asks, what can we do about education? This is about the British system, but I think it’s very relevant to all!”

Surbhi Bhatia presentsEducating the Educators? posted at The Viewspaper ยป The Viewspaper, saying, “Education in India, specially at primary level is a lot about “mugging up” or forcing children to memorise without giving them the in-depth practical knowledge about the subject. Steps are being taken to reform this and to make teaching more interactive.”
