When Peanut Butter Became the Enemy – Part 1

There is a lot of conflicting advice out there concerning when to introduce high risk foods like peanut butter to your child. The recommended age ranges from 1 to 3 or 4 depending on who you talk to. When we were deciding on a time line for our family, we considered our family history with food allergies. There is none! I decided to go ahead and do a small trial run with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which was made with a very thin layer of peanut butter. Immediately I noticed he did not seem to like the peanut … Continue reading

Watching Out for Food Allergies

You’ve probably noticed that I am new to the baby blog! I am still writing over at the pregnancy blog, but since my life is monopolized by a cute little 17-month-old who has recently learned to climb just about every piece of furniture, I thought I would share my experiences, advice and know-how over here as well. While my son is healthy, there is one issue which has a huge impact on our day to day life: he has food allergies. Ever since he was diagnosed just shortly after his first birthday, the way we eat and how we handle … Continue reading

Dilemma: Baby Food Storage

When I decided to make my own baby food, I didn’t go out to buy any special materials. Sure, there are some handy do-it-yourself baby food kids, but I couldn’t justify spending the money on them. I use my own pots to steam the vegetables, puree them in a regular small food processor, and store them in regular Tupperware. The Tupperware is where I ran into some problems. Our refrigerator is usually jam-packed with food and drinks. Don’t ask me why, because I couldn’t tell you. It’s just my husband , daughter, and me. What are we going to do … Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a One-Year-Old: Afternoon/Evening

This is a continuation of yesterday’s blog, which shared the morning routine of my one-year-old daughter. Today’s blog will share with you my daughter’s afternoon routine. See how it compares with yours. My daughter’s morning nap (beginning around 10:30am) very often will go until noon. As soon as she’s up, we get lunch ready. These days, she’s mostly eating soft, partially pureed vegetables and fruits. She’s also learning to drink water from a cup (we are not doing cow’s milk with her). After lunch, we either play with toys in the living room, or relax on a blanket in the … Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a One-Year-Old: Morning

I’m confident and comfortable with the fact that every child is different. Each child has different sleep habits, eating habits, and develops at his own rate. Still, I like to hear what other babies and mothers are going through to see how it compares to what my baby and I are experiencing. For this reason, I’m going to give you a day in the life of my one-year-old. I figure some of you reading this may also have a one-year-old, or a child close to that age. As your child goes through her day, you may be thinking, “Is that … Continue reading

Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Quinoa

I’ve developed a fairly active social life with other young mothers living near me. During our get-togethers, our conversations generally center around all things baby: breastfeeding, solid feeding, diapers, spit-up, sleep. You name it, we talk about it. A word that frequently came up during our discussions about solids was one I had never heard before: quinoa. One friend and my sister were both feeding quinoa to their infant sons. I was intrigued, but because we were in the process of moving, I never took the time to investigate this so-called superfood. I ran across a box of quinoa in … Continue reading

I’m Back!

As I haven’t blogged in over a month, I feel the need to explain my absence. In the course of about two months, my husband graduated from college, received a job in a different city, we moved, and we attended two family reunions (one that required a plane trip and sleeping in a tent). Those events would keep any person busy, but attempting to do all of them with an 11-month-old? That’s a different story. To begin, packing up an apartment while trying to keep my child entertained was no easy feat, especially because I strongly believe in attachment parenting. … Continue reading

Packing with a Baby

My son is now 6 years old, but packing for a trip never seems to get any easier, does it? Rather than packing enough diapers and wipes, I now worry about getting the Nintendo DS and enough DVDs for the trip. Still, there is plenty of summer left and if you are planning a trip, here are a few hints for packing travel items for a baby. Ship Items If you are visiting your mom and dad for two weeks and have a lot of activities planned, you will need items such as a stroller. But, carrying it in the … Continue reading

Is She a Baby or a Puppy?

If you walked into my living room without knowing anything about me, you’d think I was the proud owner of a little puppy. I’m not sure that quite sums it up. Let’s put it this way: If you walked into my living room without knowing anything about me, you’d think I was the proud owner of a rambunctious, mischievious, downright naughty little puppy. You’d be lucky if you caught a glimpse of the carpet. Instead, our floor is blanketed with a fine layer of pieces of paper, toilet paper, and tissues. Yep, our baby is a bonafide paper shredder. Why … Continue reading

Are Photo Albums Old-Fashioned?

One of my most valued possessions is my collection of photo albums. My mother did an excellent job of capturing our lives in photographs, and an even more excellent job of organizing them into albums. No, she didn’t scrapbook, as many often do these days. She put them all in a row in regular albums. I have one album for every two years of my life. I’ve continued the tradition with our daughter. As I look around at other families, I sometimes feel old-fashioned for continuing the tradition. It seems that most families today are doing one of two things: … Continue reading
