The Modest Nursing Mom

Nursing in public can be tricky. Everyone has their opinions and concerns about it. No matter the concern most will agree that modesty is key. A nursing mom does not want to make others feel uncomfortable nor is she interested in flashing every passerby in the mall. Many cover up behind blankets or wraps or retreat to bathrooms or a private area. Many malls now have family bathrooms with nursing stations. However, I never feed myself in a bathroom or my other children so why would I feed my infant in a bathroom? Even if a mom tries to wear … Continue reading

Nursing Necklaces: A Solution for the Distracted Nurser

When my daughter was a newborn, breastfeeding was pretty relaxing. Once she latched on, she’d eat for about 20 minutes straight without ever coming up for air. I could count on relaxing during these times, and often caught a few ZZZ’s while she filled up her little belly. The older my daughter got, the less relaxing nursing sessions became. I still cherish our special breastfeeding moments together, but I’m definitely not getting any power naps in while she dines. Where she used to be blissfully unaware of the world around her, my baby girl is now as nosy as they … Continue reading

Reusable Breast Pads

Having a baby definitely changes a woman’s body. I’m not going to get into all of the ways my body will never be the same again after conceiving and giving birth, but I am going to talk about one part of being a new mom: leaky breasts. I’ll never forget the day my milk came in. I still hadn’t left the hospital, because my daughter stayed in the Special Care Unit for a week. I had just walked out of the bathroom connected to my daughter’s room, and either a nurse or my mother asked me, “Has your milk come … Continue reading

A Safe Drink: Chemicals in Baby Bottles and Cups

Water is good for you. But when water, formula, milk or juice is stored in a container that leaches chemicals, the nourishing drink that you’ve prepared for your baby turns into something more – a chemical soup that you don’t want anyone to drink, let alone your child. Recently, there has been a lot of concern over a specific chemical, BPA. What are the concerns with chemicals in baby bottles and cups? As plastics are heated in the microwave or the dishwasher, they can release chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA). This particular chemical mimics the female hormone estrogen, and too … Continue reading

Nursing Questions: Can You Wear a Baby and Nurse at the Same Time?

Moms of newborns, fear not! When you first deliver your baby, it seems like you will never, ever move from the couch again. However, after breastfeeding is established and you feel at ease latching on your newborn, it’s totally possible to walk and nurse at the same time! You don’t have to sit on the couch surrounded by pillows and snacks – that is, unless you want to. How can you make it easier to move and nurse? While “grab your baby and answer the door while nursing” is one approach, and it’s one that I’ve used quite frequently, it’s … Continue reading

Snacks for Nursing Mothers

When you have a nursing newborn, you can feel hungry all of the time. Yet there’s no time too cook anything, it seems. Here are some snack ideas for nursing moms. You can combine a lot of these to make a lunch, have them at a nursing station, or take them on a walk. • Pasta Pasta contains a lot of energy, usually in the form of carbohydrates and protein. Pre-cook tortellinis and raviolis. and freeze them in little containers. • Smoothies I find smoothies to be a pain to make. However, if you make enough you can snack on … Continue reading

Why Enfamil Supports Breastfeeding

Enfamil is looking to make over its image and associate itself with breastfeeding by providing moms with an even more ‘pro-breastfeeding’ diaper bag. Really, most of the formula companies do this as well, but Enfamil has taken it a step further according to local hospitals in that it provides the ‘most complete source of breastfeeding and supplementing information.’ Hmmmm. Why exactly does Enfamil support breastfeeding mothers? A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing I decided to take a look at the newly improved Enfamil breastfeeding support bag. Make no mistake, Enfamil is a formula company. That is how they make money. Women … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Should I Use a Nipple Shield?

Question: My nipples are sore and cracked. If I use a nipple shield, will it help them heal faster? Also, how do I use a nipple shield. Generally speaking, the answer is a resounding NO! You should never use a nipple shield outside of the care of a qualified IBCLC (lactation consultant). Most lactation consultants will not encourage you to use a nipple shield either but rather will work with you to fix the latch (which is the problem if your nipples are cracked and bleeding). Nipple shields are useful in a few instances but we’ll get to that in … Continue reading
