Workout Buddy

Our two year old son has entered the stage of copying pretty much everything that we do and say. He will even mimic our tone of voice and facial expressions. In so doing he does a great job keeping us in check because we do not want to do or say something that would be inappropriate for our son to do or say. In recent weeks our son has taken to mimicking my workout moves. He tries to do jumping jacks, butt kicks, sit ups, plank exercises, free weight exercises (with or without the weights and sometimes using toys as … Continue reading

Another Playdate

As the weather has gotten more and more summer like, our son has been wanting to spend more and more time out of doors. The only problem is that we live on a fairly busy street with practically no yard. So in order to give our son a good amount of safe outdoor time and a someone his own age to play with, I planned a playdate with some of our friends. For our playdate we were heading to a turn of the century era farm and town set up to be as realistic and functional as possible in the … Continue reading

Our Evolution of Discipline Part IV

As the transition to our new home began to set in for our son, his actions started to reach a sort of middle ground and he was getting time outs less and less. Things changed on his second birthday. He seemed to age overnight. His language exploded with his simple sentences turning into paragraphs. He also started to find another level to his independence and started pulling the overtly defiant card. While he was going to time out without any argument, after his birthday he started to contest his time outs with whiny tantrums. His cousin taught him the word … Continue reading

Our Evolution of Discipline Part III

In the early days of putting our disciplinary plan into actions, we did not really visit other people very often so dealing with him acting out at someone’s house was not a problem. Inevitably, once the craziness of the beginning of the school year died down (I was a full time high school teacher at this stage in our son’s life), I started visiting friends again. It was interesting to see how our son interacted with other people. While he was largely very well behaved and and a pretty “good listener,” there were of course instances during our outings to … Continue reading

Our Evolution of Discipline Part II

We continued disciplining him with time outs on the spot and he began to learn what he could and could not do. He had good days where he was put into time out only once or twice the entire day and bad days where he seemed to be in time out all day long. Still his behavior was improving and he seemed to understand that certain actions would merit a time out which he did not like. As he got a little older how we disciplined evolved a little bit. He went from having his time outs sitting where he … Continue reading

Our Evolution of Discipline Part I

My son was born at the height of summer in the dry heat of West Texas. After twenty hours of labor, nine of which were quite active and painful, my first child was born before the first light of the new day. As I held my precious and tiny baby boy in the next few weeks, the thought of how I was going to discipline him crossed my mind. It was hard to believe that my innocent, helpless child would ever need to be disciplined but the day came sooner than I had anticipated. Soon enough our toddling son was … Continue reading

Developing Easter Traditions With a Toddler Part II

We did not know how our son would respond to finding the eggs, he was twenty months old and quite adept at using signs in combination with his small vocabulary. The eggs were hidden in our very tiny yard in Texas, mostly in plain sight. He was a little confused at first but with a little coaxing he anxiously began looking and finding eggs all over the yard. He quickly filled the Easter basket with the eggs. However, he had not yet discovered that some of the eggs contained chocolate. I handed him a plastic egg and he gave me … Continue reading

Developing Easter Traditions With a Toddler Part I

I never gave Easter Traditions much thought until I had my own children. My husband and I come from families with very different Easter traditions so when it came to developing our own traditions we had a bit of a disagreement. My family did an Easter egg hunt along with searching for our hidden Easter baskets. This took place after dinner and we (the children) had to take a nap in order for the Easter Bunny to hide our treats. My husband’s family just had the egg hunt with a free for all Easter basket of sorts full of candy … Continue reading

A Day at the Zoo Part III

Of course the idea of a quick snack when it comes to nursing a baby is relative, it took longer than my son would have liked. We found a dry bench indoors (all the benches outside were of course wet from the rain) out of the way of incoming zoo visitors. My baby girl took her time nursing. Meanwhile, my son found ways to keep his aunts busy. They found one of those photo booths. They did not pay to get their pictures taken but they did pretend to and that was pretty entertaining for my little man. Once my … Continue reading

A Day at the Zoo Part II

If a few birds could make my son run for and dive into the stroller, I could not imagine how he would react to some of the other larger animals. He did not want to get out of the stroller to look at the gecko so we continued the tour through the jungle like foliage. When we came upon some kind of exotic monkey, he promptly told us that he wanted out to see the monkey. He continued on foot to see the boa constrictor. He wanted to be carried when we came to another larger waterfall and some strange … Continue reading
