The New Craze of High School Quilting

It seems that a new craze has taken over the interests of high school students in Pittsburgh. Thankfully this is an interest worth having! The new cool thing to do at Elizabeth Forward High School is making quilts. Rebecca Fest has begun teaching students to quilt through her quilting class. In the beginning the students were more interested in making clothing. However after a couple of students had completed quilts to show off, everyone wanted one! The quilts that these students are making are far from being the old patterns that our grandparents once made. The students create the quilts … Continue reading

No More Tag at School

Many of us can likely remember the countless hours on the school playground playing games such as Red Rover and Dodge Ball. Somehow the entire class would divide up into teams and begin to destroy one another either by hitting with the ball or breaking the lock of arms. Either way we were out for the win. Some students left school with bruises, bloody noses, scraps, and cuts. However the concept of dividing up and playing as a team stood strong and was important in our learning how to get along in the world. Today you will not see those … Continue reading

Virginia Tech Shooting Anniversary

I am sure that we all can remember the devastation that took place at the Virginia Tech campus. It was one of the worst shootings in all of school and university history. If the story did not touch your life in some way personally, many of you were touched through the news reporting and media. The school suffered great sadness and loss after the shootings. Many were criticized and feelings raged high. Still today families and school administrators are trying to cope with and make sense of the happenings that took place on that day. Today, here we are one … Continue reading

Gas Prices Affect Schools

Rising gas prices all over the country are causing quiet a stir. Newscasts, newspapers, and all other types of media are giving new reports of prices going up each day. Even truck drivers have gotten in on the protest of the rising cost. Almost everyone in America has been affected in some way. People everywhere in the United States are being forced to recalculate their budgets in order to allow for the extra cash being put into their vehicles. Education is no different. Schools too are seeing a negative impact of the high fuel prices. It is costing more to … Continue reading

Driver Leaves Students Unattended on Bus

Previously I commented that the past couple of months had held two major runway school bus stories. In the first story, it seems that a student was caught in wrong doing. However in this story the driver was obliviously out of line. This story took place in Cleveland. It seems that a bus was on its way to deliver about twenty-seven students to a charter school when the driver decided to stop and get fuel. While at the station, the driver proceeded to leave the children unattended and go into the restroom. While inside, for some unknown reason, the bus … Continue reading

Girl Skips School and Saves a Runaway School Bus

There have recently been two runaway school bus stories in the news. In both stories children used quick thinking and stopped the bus before major consequences took place. However in the first story that I will share with you, the student is suffering some consequences of her own. It seems that the high school student, Amanda Rouse, began feeling sick. Instead of visiting the nurse or calling home for someone to come and pick her up, she took actions into her own hands. Against the rules, she got on a bus with elementary school students and decided to ask the … Continue reading

Teacher Strike

We hear of many protests in the form of strikes. The most common reason for persons to strike in due to the dissatisfaction of working terms such as money and insurance. Many different occupations have been on strike from their jobs. I have recently heard of truck driver refusing to move off the roadway due to high gas prices. However the circumstances are typically different when it comes to teachers who strike. When teachers strike, children, parents, and all other forms of jobs are all affected. Parents must find someone to watch their children while the students cannot go to … Continue reading

Take 10 Fitness Program

There is no doubt that our world has become more obese. Many statistics show that children are growing more and more overweight. They are now suffering from many diseases that once were never thought to occur in children. These are diseases such as certain types of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Many actions have been taken to increase the health of our children. Programs have been developed to encourage children to eat healthier and exercise more. Schools have been required to serve healthier lunches and take unhealthy snacks out of the building. Schools are also required to make … Continue reading

Latest Discussion on Sex Education…

There has been some discussion in the forums about sex education. It seems that an incident early in February caught the eyes of a reader. Since then she has questioned the opinions of others on the issue. In previous articles I have discussed sex education. I have talked about how many programs are advocates for safe sex instead of for abstinence. The argument is “if children are going to do it anyway we should at least teach them how to do it safely”. I agree that a section of sex education should be about safe sex methods. However a class … Continue reading

Parents Sign Bedtime Contracts

Schools make it top priority to ensure that children are prepared for learning. This includes being well rested, well fed, and well cared for. Schools provide programs to help families in ensuring that children are feed. Many programs also offer students the opportunity to take food home for the weekend. Schools have been known to provide students with clothing, heat, electricity, and even medicine. The one thing that schools seem to have trouble with controlling is ensuring that children get the proper amount of sleep at night. When children are tired they cannot function effectively in the classroom. Studies show … Continue reading
