Adding Extra Information to Your Lessons

My last two articles have discussed how teachers need to push students above and beyond. Teachers need to be conscious of the needs of the students in the classroom who are above average. It is my opinion that students can learn much from just being exposed to various skills and information. We all know that exposure and life experiences greatly affect a child’s learning and performance. My exposure phase is not a separate section of my day. The exposure to new information is given through my everyday teaching. I simply add extra information that is not required. During reading, I … Continue reading

Teachers, Be Honest with Parents

In the last eight years I have worked at, been in contact with, or had teacher friends at several different schools. I have observed and researched many different teaching styles and teacher personalities. I have seen teachers who are less than social and personable and I have observed teachers who are all out almost obnoxious. There are teachers who are very approachable for students and parents and then there are teachers who I do not even dare to approach! I suppose the one thing about some teachers that bothers me the most is the sugar coating and telling parents what … Continue reading

Moving to a New School

In one of my previous articles, I discussed why some teachers are leery of getting a transfer student. In some cases a transfer student may mean trouble will follow. In other cases, transfer students can mean more work and training time for the teacher. It can also be difficult if the child is academically ahead or behind in the textbook or work that the class is presently completing. In the last article I took a stand point more from a teacher’s point of view. In this article I will look at transferring schools more from a student’s point of view. … Continue reading

More Advice on How to Call a Teacher at Home

In a previous article, I discussed the incident where a student called the school director’s home and his wife returned the call. I then discussed how frustrating it can be to have work related calls at home. While most teachers and public officials should expect to receive a few calls at home (especially if their number is listed in the telephone book), too many calls can be overwhelming and stressful. My article also began giving parents some tips on how to more positively call teachers or school faculty members. My first tip was to check and make sure that the … Continue reading

Calling a Teacher at Home

In an article written earlier, I recapped a news story about a student who called the school director’s house to question why school did not close for snow. The less than happy wife of the director returned the call and angrily commented that the boy should not have called their house. My husband and I are both in the education field. We do receive calls from parents at our house. Because we are both in elementary education, we rarely receive calls from students. I can understand the wife’s frustrations with people calling the house about work issues. I am sure … Continue reading

How Donorschoose.org Works

Several articles ago I wrote about a website that I had discovered. Later I wrote another article describing the site. I will finish my discussion about the site, donorschoose.org, in this article. Donorschoose.org is a website that offers teachers a chance to get funding from donors for special projects. This is how the site works. Teachers must create a proposal for their project on the site. The teacher must describe the project and list all needed materials. The workers at donorschoose.org will review the proposal and ask any questions necessary. The proposal will be published on the site and donors … Continue reading

Returning to Class after Christmas Vacation

The day returning to school from Christmas vacation or any vacation from school can be wild. The children, the young ones anyway, are so full of stories and details of the break. Some cannot wait to share about Christmas presents while others cannot wait to share a special outing or event that they attended. The older students are also excited. However, they look more forward to talking to each other rather than to the teacher. The first hour that the children are together can be very loud and talkative. They are overwhelmed to see one another and to compare stories. … Continue reading

More about Donorschoose.org

Previously, I described my excitement by finding the site Donorschoose.org. Because it is so hard for teachers to find extra money for special classroom projects, this site was a really good find! Presently, I do not have a project that needs to be entered on the site for funding. However, when one arises I will certainly consider the site if money is needed. Of course, the site was founded by teachers. It began in 2000. A group of Bronx public school teachers had a great need for extra funding. The site helped create a connection between the teachers with need … Continue reading

When Teachers are Moms

Being a teacher can have many pros and cons. I love my job and would not trade with anyone else in the world (however I would trade salaries with a few people!) One aspect of being a teacher that many moms must learn to overcome is that fact that children are a constant part of your life. While it is very important for moms and teachers to love and enjoy children, the time spent with children each day can get overwhelming. Teachers have very little time away from their students each day. They usually get a thirty-minute lunch break and … Continue reading

Tips for Teachers: Pencils

Today, I would like to add another selection to my Tips for Teachers section. This tip comes from my personal experience in first grade and kindergarten. Primary grade teachers need as few distractions and complications as possible when it comes to teaching the children. Young children have shorter attention spans and do not need help getting off task. Therefore I choose not to allow my students to carry out particular activities that take away their attention and time from class. One such activity is sharpening pencils. Young students are completely fascinated by pencil sharpeners. They will spend a great amount … Continue reading
