Planning for Different Types of Learners

The days of planning a lesson and teaching to a class as a whole are over. Teachers are now pushed to focus on each student as an individual. In the beginning, this concept can be overwhelming for teachers. However, after some practice it begins to come natural to teachers during a lesson or lesson planning. Teachers should strive to meet the needs of all of the learners in their classroom. When planning a lesson, teachers are to plan activities that will reach each and every learning type. Not everyone learns the same way. People have different ways of understanding and … Continue reading

Tips for Teachers: Keep All Notes Sent to You by Parents

Today I am adding another article to my Tips for Teachers section. I think that it is very important for teachers to learn from the mistakes of other teachers. My tip today is about paper work and noting keeping. It is very important to create a file for each child in your classroom. You can then add all of the notes from and to parents to the file. I keep all notes that are sent to me from parents no matter how simple or small they may seem. This I am thankful for doing. Last year I had a parent … Continue reading

Introducing Tips for Teachers

Experience is very valuable when you are a teacher. The college experience can never prepare you for the real classroom setting. No matter how much you have read or researched, there is nothing like trail and error to see which methods and techniques are best for you. During your first year of teaching you will find out that some things work and some do not. You will revisit and revise ideas. Some you will throw out completely and vow never to repeat. Others you will write down and carry out for years to come. Each year of teaching, you will … Continue reading

Classroom Pets

Ever since I began teaching I have had a class pet or class pets. While class pets can be wonderful for the students, they are also a lot of responsibility for the teacher. Before deciding that a class pet is right for your classroom, you should put a lot of thought into the time and effort that you are willing to place into caring for the animal. You must consider what will happen to the pet over weekends, vacations, and school breaks. A fish aquarium with fish is the most common class pet. This is the pet that I currently … Continue reading

Bus Duty

This week began my first week of bus duty for the year. Bus duty is required by most teachers in most schools. Bus duty is the duty when a teacher must look after students who ride the bus either in the mornings, the afternoons, or both. At my school, teachers only have bus duty in the mornings. The students stay in their assigned rooms until the buses leave in the afternoons. Bus duty at my school begins at 7:15. There are two teachers on duty each day. One teacher is assigned to the gym where students go if they are … Continue reading

Instructional Assistants

When I first began teaching, teachers’ assistants did the paperwork for teachers. The assistants were used to copy papers, grade papers, put up bulletin boards, and any other tasks that did not involve teaching. They usually came by the classroom and asked if you had any needs for the day. They spent most of their time in their workroom working on papers and such. Over the past couple of years, in my school, things have changed. Teachers’ assistants are now instructional assistants. They help during the instruction time. They do less of the copying and stapling and more tutoring and … Continue reading

What Can Teachers Do About Other Lacking Teachers?

It is a sad fact of teaching that there are bad teachers. There are burnt-out teachers. There are teachers that need to leave the profession. For a teacher that really cares about the best interest of the children, it can be very hard to work with one of the teachers described above. So what can teachers do when they work with others that give the profession a bad name? First, mentor. Be a good example for the lacking coworker. Share and offer ideas. Perhaps the teacher just needs a push to get started. If the teacher is a veteran, perhaps … Continue reading

Parent Night

Parental involvement in school is a key element to a student’s success. It is essential that parents know what their child is doing at school both academically and behavior wise. However due to working and busy schedules, some parents rarely step inside of their child’s classroom. Therefore, it is crucial that schools and teachers make every effort to get parents involved. Many children are now back at school. They have met their new classmates and new teacher. Because it is equally important for parents to also get acquainted with their child’s new class, many schools and teachers host back to … Continue reading

Male Principals

Two of my past articles have discussed the various duties of school principals and the advantages of having a female in elementary school administration. While there are several pros to having a woman principal, there are also advantages to having a man in school leadership. In my past experiences, I have realized that parents, teachers, and students seem to refrain from pushing and pressuring a man as much as they do a woman. When I taught with a male teacher, parents tended to give me more of their complaints and concerns. Even if the two of us carried out similar … Continue reading

Female Principals

In a previous article I discussed the rise of female principals in elementary schools. At one point in time school principals were mainly male. Today, females make up at least half of all elementary school principals. There are both advantages and disadvantages to having a female school principal. I have worked for both a male principal and a female principal. Although both were good experiences, there were things that I liked and disliked about each. Females tend to be more popular as principals in elementary schools rather than high schools because females relate better to younger children. There are also … Continue reading
