Improving Fitness with a Heart Rate Monitor

When it comes to fitness devices, most of us are probably more familiar with the benefits of a pedometer than a heart rate monitor.  But you might want to consider investing in one, if you want to improve your fitness even more. Exercise is about more than just how often you do it and for how long.  The level (or intensity) of the exercise is just as important. A heart rate monitor can keep track of your heartbeats, allowing you to stay in the appropriate heart rate zone.  In other words, you don’t want the intensity of your exercise to … Continue reading

Insoles Comfort: Free-Flex

One of the last things we sometimes think about when it comes to exercise is comfort. And out of all the gear you could wear, shoes are the most important. In fact, wearing the right shoe could actually prevent injuries. I love my shoes. But they require inserts in order to bring the most comfort. I have gone through a variety of different insoles to find the right one. Needless to say, I ended up settling for what I had. It wasn’t until I was offered a free pair of insoles that I realized how much I really had been … Continue reading

Fitness Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it might be the perfect time to give her the gift of health. Why not encourage her in the way of fitness? Of course, you have to be careful about this. You don’t want to hurt feelings. In fact, it’s probably a good idea to only give a fitness gift if your mother truly has a desire to make changes in her life or has already started to exercise. One of the best gifts you can give is a pedometer. It’s a great way to keep track of your steps and set goals. If … Continue reading

Exercise Clothing

Have you ever given much thought to what you wear when you workout? I have a confession to make about my exercise gear. For the longest time I would workout in my pajamas. It just seemed easier to stay in them since it was the morning, get in my workout and then take a shower and get dressed for the day. Although they were comfortable (which is important when choosing clothing to exercise in), it wasn’t really workable. Take for instance my pajama bottoms which were a bit too loose. Or the longer pants that I would step on. But … Continue reading

My Perfect Water Bottle

I am an advocate for drinking water and lots of it! Whether it is for your workout or just regular day routine, you need to be hydrating. I also try to be green and tend to steer away from using individual, non-reusable bottles. I am always trying to drink 8 glasses a day which would be about 8 individual bottles! Instead I have decided to fill up a reusable water bottle for my daily activities and workouts. Finding a perfect water bottle has been a long, grueling process. I find one that looks alright, buy it because how else can … Continue reading

Underneath It All: What to Wear Underneath Your Exercise Outfit

When you made the decision to establish an exercise routine for yourself you probably gave a great deal of thought as to just how you were going to go about it. You might have decided on an exercise plan that involved some type of exercise equipment. You may have contemplated using some kind of exercising DVDs to use in your workout. You may have even decided to venture out to a gym and purchased a gym membership. If you were going to be working out at home you probably did not give much thought as to what you would be … Continue reading

Fitness Footwear

I once drove 120 miles to get my hands on a pair of discontinued running shoes. For some reason Nike constantly gets rid of the shoes that I perform best in. Seriously. Every single pair of Nike running shoes I’ve completed marathons in has been yanked from store shelves leaving me to scour the Internet for leftovers. When it comes to exercise and footwear, most people are quite loyal to their stomps. However, I recently considered straying from my beloved Nikes to try out a pair of performance enhancing EasyTone shoes by Reebok. The popular show manufacturer recently debuted its … Continue reading

Bursting Fitness Balls and Fat Flyers

Fitness ball fanatics beware… those large, inflatable balls that you use for crunches and other exercises are popping at an alarming rate. EB Brands is recalling about 3 million of its fitness balls after getting dozens of reports of balls bursting because of overinflation. What’s more, the popping balls have resulted in numerous injuries, including fractures and bruises. According to reports, nearly 50 balls have burst while individuals were using them to complete exercises. The recall includes 55, 65, and 75-centimeter diameter size fitness balls in various colors with the Bally Total Fitness, Everlast, or Valeo logos printed on them. … Continue reading

Do You Protect Your Eyes When You Exercise?

I once doled out $120 for a pair of sunglasses designed specifically for runners. I wore them once during a marathon and haven’t used them since. I bought them after reading several articles about the importance of eyewear for long distance runners. I worried about my cornea’s being burned while running in sunny conditions and the increase risk of cancer associated with lack of proper eyewear, so I bought the sunglasses… and now I barely use them partially because I can never find them when I need them and partially because I don’t enjoy having to constantly fiddle with them … Continue reading

Super Bowl Champs Reveal Secret Fitness Weapon

Now that the Lombardi trophy is in their possession and their championship rings have been fit, the Pittsburgh Steelers are revealing the fitness toy that helped them win Super Bowl XLIII. According to the team’s trainer, the Ab Coaster was an integral part of the Steelers training regimen in 2008. Yes, the same Ab Coaster that is advertised on late-night TV every… single… night. Persistence paid off for Ab Coaster marketers, because the Steelers are now crediting the $400 machine for their abs of steel. Following their Super Bowl win a number of players and trainers raved to news reporters … Continue reading
