Had a Great Bike Ride Today

Today I went on about a fifteen mile bike ride with a new friend. We did a trail that starts about half a mile from my house and rode for about an hour and a half. As we were biking along the trail, I realized how enjoyable biking is and what I like about it. One reason I like biking is because getting into biking won’t break the bank. I also like how you can use biking for exercise, leisure, errands or getting to work. There are lots of things you can do when you have a bike, even if … Continue reading

Why Are Americans Unfit?

Two words: They’re lazy. According to a new study, Americans are just a bunch of lazy sloths, who could be fit, but are not willing to sacrifice the time to exercise. Okay, perhaps, I’m interpreting the study’s results a bit more liberally than the author would intend, but I’m pretty sure my synopsis is on target. In what may be the first large U.S. study of health and commuting, researchers found only about 17 percent of workers were willing to trade their wheels for their feet to get to and from their jobs. The study, which queried more than 2,000 … Continue reading

Lance Armstrong Set to Ride Again

Back in the saddle again… and for once I’m not talking about Lance Armstrong’s love life. Rather, the man many considered the “King of Fitness,” is straddling his bike again on the road to what he hopes will be his eighth Tour de France title. The 36-year-old cancer survivor announced today that he plans to come out of retirement to cycle professionally. “I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden,” Armstrong said in … Continue reading

Bike Riding – How to Get the Training Wheels Off

Summer time is here and this year, it will be a momentous summer because we’ll be working diligently with our daughter to shed her training wheels, master her swimming lessons and so much more. When it comes to getting the training wheels off, it can be a real rite of passage for child and parents. Some Kids are Daredevils I know many children in my neighborhood that are real daredevils. I, myself, was a daredevil. I shed my training wheels two days after I got my bike. My motivation lay more in the fact that I broke the training wheels … Continue reading

To Spin or Not to Spin?

Do you spin? I’m not necessarily into spinning. I like bike riding, but I’m not that into spinning. Spinning makes me think of twirling and riding a bike shouldn’t be like twirling – at least not if I am to perform it safely. Spinning is very popular in gyms all over the country and it encourages thousands of people to make use of the gym cycles in an intense workout regimen. Fitness Classes Spinning is all about riding a stationary bike in a controlled atmosphere with an instructor driving you on to music that’s designed to get your heart racing … Continue reading

Bike Riding for Exercise and Pleasure

I mentioned a week or so ago that I finally got my bike. A friend sold it to me for just fifteen dollars. The bike was in great shape, but we took it to a bike shop for maintenance anyway. My husband picked it up from the shop on Saturday. The brakes are primed, the chain is clean and reset and the wheels are aligned correctly. I was excited to have the bike sitting here in my garage. Stomach Flu and Plans My daughter came down with a bout of stomach flu late on Friday and she spent most of … Continue reading

Runners & Cyclists Need Weight Training, Too

Are you a runner or a cyclist? A lot of athletes who run regularly or cycle regularly whether they are in training or not sometimes resist the idea of weight training because they get plenty of exercise when they are riding their bikes or running daily. In fact, I know one runner who regularly participates in marathons and she didn’t like the idea of weight training, until a personal trainer proved to her that weight training actually improved her endurance and running. Weight Training Adds Muscle Tissue Most cardiovascular activities, including running and cycling, are great for building heart and … Continue reading

My Daughter Wants a Tandem

My far too bright for her own good sometimes and when she came home from school the other day and announced to me that she wanted a tandem bike, I made a mistake. I asked her if she knew what it was and she said yes, it was a bike that mommy and she could ride on together. She liked the idea, after all – she knows I love to ride on my recumbent stationary bike and she loves to ride her bike – so why shouldn’t we do it together? Where’s the Mistake? I didn’t want to tell her … Continue reading
