Food T.V.: Are You a Food Lover or a Food Fighter?

With the advent of reality television, of which we were inundated while the writers were on strike, also came reality television for those of us passionate about food. While the Food Network has been a clear staple in the land of food television, other networks are jumping the bandwagon not to be left behind in a trail of crumbs. But are these shows for educating or do we watch them because we’re obsessed with squabbling? Hell’s Kitchen I generally don’t admit my bias right off the bat in an article but I simply can’t help it. I hate shows where … Continue reading

Why I Can’t Get Into Cooking Shows

While I admit that I love Rachel Ray. . .I have to say that I can’t get into cooking shows. You’d think I’d love them. After all, I have at one point or another in my life been subscribed to every single cooking magazine that I’m aware of. My recipe collection takes up it’s own filing cabinet. I explain my recipe addiction to others as similar to their scrapbooking addiction. So you’d think cooking shows and I would have a fast and unbreakable bond. But not so. I love Rachel Ray (especially before she became a spokesperson for Dunkin’ Donuts) … Continue reading

Fall’s Newest Cooking Shows

Kitchen Nightmares If you’re never planning on eating out again, you’ll have to tune in tonight to watch Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. The premise of the show is that people who are struggling to run a restaurant invite Ramsay to come and revamp conditions and turn the restaurant into one of the premier venues in town. It seems like a pretty good deal–for the price of utter humiliation and having the equivalent of a drill instructor yell at you for a few days–you get a total rejuvenation of your business. You may remember that Ramsay was actually sued by some … Continue reading

Can’t Get Enough of Gordon Ramsay?

If you’re not familiar with Gordon Ramsay–or his infamous temper and propensity towards bad language–just watch Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a reality TV. show where wannabe chefs compete by completing dinner service at a super busy restaurant. Every week the risotto is made improperly, the chicken is too dry and the beef Wellington is done wrong. I can’t for the life of me see how anyone wins on the show because every week Ramsay screams and yells his way through the dinner service. Suffice it to say, as big of a fan as I am of cooking shows–this one is on … Continue reading

Food Network – Do You Watch?

Before I got married, I couldn’t cook—seriously. I lived in a dorm room while attending college, and my culinary endeavors didn’t progress beyond tuna salad sandwiches and the occasional non-homemade spaghetti. Let’s suffice it to say, I ate a lot of Ramen noodles while in college…and frozen burritos…and deli sandwiches. My waist hated me by the end of my first year. When I got married, I had just started substitute teaching. Three months later I was pregnant. Four months after that, I was on bed rest for pre-eclampsia. I started watching The Food Network. Let me tell you, if you … Continue reading

Top Chef Finale

Last night the final contestants for Top Chef, Tiffani and Harold, finally got to do what they’d been waiting for: show their skill in creating a multi-course meal of their choosing. Both did very well and impressed an all-star panel of judges. There were a few missteps, but you could see that Lorraine Bracco wanted to lick her plate clean on several occasions. I was so hungry by the end of the episode I went upstairs to see what was in the pantry, and was so disappointed not to find any Kobe beef or artichoke risotto. I had to settle … Continue reading

Top Chef Finale Part 1: Las Vegas

Top Chef Finale Part 1: Las Vegas Dave got sent home this week, leaving Harold and Tiffani to duke it out for the title of Top Chef. The only thing that was surprising about it was that this time, he didn’t deserve to go home. Dave’s been the underdog up until the finale, where he performed, in this blogger’s humble opinion, much better than Tiffani, but was sent packing anyway. His mistake was not following the directions on one of the challenges. There were three challenges, each a “room service” order to be made in 30 minutes. One for some … Continue reading

Top Chef Reunion Episode

On last night’s episode of Top Chef, Stephen Aspirino came out the clear winner. Yes, he’s already been booted from the show and is not going to Las Vegas to compete for the title of Top Chef. His win had nothing to do with food. It was about eating some humble pie and taking responsibility for his arrogant attitude in previous episodes. Probably the most grievous of Stephen’s offenses was when he lit into Candace for wanting to use cookie cutters to cut shapes out of fruit when the chefs were preparing a meal for children. He called her inexperienced … Continue reading
