Why I Rarely Spend Money on Bathroom Products

Some people put in line items for bathroom products, cleaning products and then groceries. Usually, we lump all of these expenses together, since I most often buy groceries and cleaning products at the same time. I was thinking about bathroom products, though, all of those shampoos, soaps, body wash, etc., and curious about how much we spend. With the exception of some special toothpaste because of one child’s allergy, we really don’t spend much money on bathroom products. In fact, I can’t recall the last time that we did. So how do I get away with hardly spending anything on … Continue reading

The Wii Woe: How We Saved $200

One of our big expenses two Christmases ago was a Wii video game system for the family. The price tag of the thing really got under my skin, but we were able to justify it as a good purchase for a number of reasons. A few months ago, my son got a used game for his birthday. He was excited to play with it until the Wii stopped being able to read the disc. Since it was used, I returned it as a faulty disc and the store replaced it. The sales lady noticed that the disc had deep concentric … Continue reading

My New Hobby Is Finding Freebies

One of my favorite frugal hobbies is collecting freebies. I just started this back up a few weeks ago and am glad I did. I’ve gotten everything from laundry soap and perfume to dog food and breakfast bars. This nice little hobby is good for many reasons. Being the frugal zealot that I am, it satisfies that itch to reduce costs and even get something for free. It’s also a way for me to take short breaks between job projects. And, since I’m a professional reviewer, I can help spread the word—or warning—about products. Many years ago getting free things … Continue reading

Saving Money on Paper Products

Paper products are expensive, face it. And we need them. Things like facial tissue, toilet paper, napkins and paper towels are a must have in many homes. At least the toilet paper is. I won’t tell you to skimp on the toilet paper, because, well, we need it! However, let’s talk about ways you can save on the rest. Napkins The easiest way to save is simply not to use them. Use fabric napkins instead. They last longer, are easily thrown in the wash and are actually more sanitary. If you are not using fabric napkins, then at least watch … Continue reading

The Least Frugal Places to Shop for School Supplies

There are just some places that you should avoid purchasing school supplies. The reason is, because no matter how great one deal is, that is how they rope you in. They hope by offering a great deal, you’ll stay and purchase the rest. Not a good idea, if you are truly interested in saving money. There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of a deal, if its worth it, but don’t do the rest of your shopping there, just because its more convenient. Here are some places to avoid purchasing school supplies: Pharmacies – Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid and Eckerd, … Continue reading

As I mentioned yesterday, my children go back to school on Thursday, which just seems crazy to me. However, we are now in the whole “last minute” school supply mode, quickly gathering up everything we can find, shopping everywhere we can think of, and just generally trying to save as much money as possible. We have five children after all, and a supply list that covers the front and back of a legal pad size piece of paper! Do Reusable Coffee Filters Save Money?

With the price of coffee rising, isn’t it nice to know that there are some ways you can reduce your cost per cup? Reusable coffee filters are one avenue to explore for savings.
