Animal Rummy Cards

I fell for the eeBoo Animal Rummy cards as soon as I saw them. The cards are a bit bigger than average so they are easier for small hands to hold. They are also laminated , and nice and thick so that they will hold up to those small hands. What is really so great though, are the illustrations on the cards. They are done by book illustrator Melissa Sweet. You can see of the books she has illustrated here. The pictures on the cards are of fish, giraffes, raccoons, foxes, lions, cats, birds, bats, dragonflies, elephants, and bears. All … Continue reading

Card Games: Go Fish

Go Fish is a game that is far older than I am. I remember the first time I played Go Fish with my grandmother and it was a great deal of fun. This past weekend, I sat down with my daughter and for the first time we played Go Fish together. We were playing with Dora playing cards to give her some familiarity with the cards and my husband sat with her on her side for the first couple of rounds to give her some backup support if she needed it. Needless to say, she loved the game – we’ve … Continue reading

Learning to Read: Sight Word Games

Sight words are a great focus of elementary education and for kids learning to read, sight words are very important. There are a lot of ways to help your child learn their sight words and to remember them and at this age, the more fun it is, the more likely you are to engage and hold their interest. Hello Card Game

Players: 4-10 Age: 12+ (younger children can play on a team with adults) Cards: Rook (with more than 5 players you need two decks) This is the card game of choice in my dad’s family. As a child whenever we would get together at my grandparents house the adults would all put the kids to bed and stay up playing “Hello,” which is the nicer name for the game (we put the O at the end instead of at the beginning). They would play during the day too when they got a chance. Once I graduated I was actually allowed … Continue reading

Sign Card Game

Number of players: 4+ Age range: 5 and older Supplies Needed: deck of cards (Skipbo or face cards) This is a great game for those of all ages. All you need is a group of people and a deck of cards. I prefer Skipbo cards because the game goes faster. You need at least four players for the game to be any fun, and up to 10 or 12 people can easily play. This game is similar in nature to Spoons. 1. The players sit in a circle around a table or on the floor. 2. The group decides on … Continue reading
