Hatchery Accused of Abuse

Cal-Cruz Hatcheries Inc. in Santa Cruz, California has been accused of animal abuse. Compassion Over Killing, an animal protection group located in Washington, D.C., had an undercover investigator to shoot a video that showed hatchlings with skin torn so badly organs were exposed. These hatchlings were trapped in machinery, drown, or thrown in bins in the video. Compassion Over Killing gave the video to the Santa Cruz County Animal Service Authority and filed a complaint against Cal-Cruz Hatcheries Inc. in February 2009. Authorities found that hatchlings were being abused and removed 88. It is believed that many more hatchlings had … Continue reading

PETA Awards Celebrity Grinches

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has awarded the worse accolades for celebrities this side of the Razzies – the “Celebrity Grinch Awards.” This the first year for PETA’s “Celebrity Grinch Awards,” co-sponsored by the World Entertainment News Network, and the awards are used to call out the most animal-unfriendly celebrities of the year. Who made the Grinch list this year? It may come to you as no small surprise that Kim Kardashian ranked high on the list. Kardashian and PETA have crossed paths before due to her love of furs. In December, PETA sponsored a Beverly Hills … Continue reading

PETA Sets its Sights on Seniors

I have always thought PETA’s ads were aimed mostly at a young audience. Think of all the people who have posed nude for PETA’s anti-fur ad – Pamela Anderson, Taraji P. Henson, Chad Ochocinco, Khloe Kardashian, Tony Gonzalez, Eva Mendes, Mario, Brooke Hogan, Steve-O – and well, there are not a lot of geriatric bodies in the bunch. But, PETA’s new campaign is aimed at an older crowd and lead by a true super-legend – Cloris Leachman. The new campaign, titled “Cloris Leachman Reveals that Seniors and Elephants Have More in Common Than Wrinkles,” consists of a video telling older … Continue reading

Celebrities vs. the Canadian Seal Hunt

Earlier this month, I blogged about Canada and its seal hunting season. The annual Canadian seal hunt is the largest in the world and the government tries to convince people it is in the best interest of the country, but it isn’t popular with everyone. In my blog, I mentioned several organizations that are against the seal hunting season. Of course, PETA and the Humane Society are among those organizations, but Sea Shepherd, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Harp Seals and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) are also involved. There have also been many celebrities … Continue reading

Groups Campaign Against Canadian Seal Hunt

This year, the Canadian government has set the quota for its yearly seal hunt higher than ever. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) set the quota at 468,200 harp, Grey, and hood seals. That is an increase of almost 150,000 from last year. Why would people want to kill the seals? There are a lot of products that can be made from seals such as fur coats, bags, and clothing, but still others want them for the meat, oil, blubber and even seal oil for the making of some omega-3 pills. Reports say there are about 6,000 seal … Continue reading

Throwing a Green Birthday Party – Part 2

Yesterday, I was talking about making your child’s birthday party green. Even if it is months away, it’s never too soon to start planning. Here are some more tips for a green birthday party: Decorations The one good thing about our son’s birthday party at this bowling alley this year is it was in the party room, so most of the decorations have been used time and time again by the bowling alley. Consider recycling decorations from year to year or at least look for those made of recycled material. Just Say No to Goody Bags Oh, this one seems … Continue reading

Bugs Bugs Go Away

It’s summer and at least here in Jacksonville, N.C., that means bugs and lots of them. But, I hate pesticides. It just seems wrong to spray chemicals to get rid of bugs. I was overjoyed when I found some natural bug repellents from Richard Fagerlund from his book “The Bugman on Bugs: Understanding Household Pests and the Environment.” To get rid of ants, mix 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, two tablespoons of jelly, and one teaspoon of boric acid. Put that in a small, disposable container and sit it where the ants are. If you have a mound you need … Continue reading
