Sandra Bullock Wins Humanitarian Award

Last Wednesday, the People’s Choice Awards was held at the Nokia Theater.  These awards are pretty cool because the celebrity honors are chosen by the people rather than industry professionals like the other award shows. The Hunger Games won five awards, singer Katy Perry won three, and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston won for best comedic actors. One special award went to Sandra Bullock, not for acting, but for her humanitarian efforts. Bullock was recognized for her many philanthropic efforts.  She has been a great supporter of the American Red Cross, having given the organization millions over the years after … Continue reading

Who Won’t Be Eating Turkey Today

I am not a huge fan of turkey, but Thanksgiving just doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving without one, at least to me. But, there are plenty of celebrities that won’t be eating turkey this year because they are vegetarian or vegan. PETA named funny man Russell Brand one of its Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2011, so needless to say he won’t be gnawing on a turkey leg tomorrow. The female Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011 was Kristen Wiig of “Saturday Night Live” and Bridemaids fame, so no turkey for her either. There are several Academy Award winners and nominees who will … Continue reading

J.K. Rowling Loses Billionaire Status

I have to admit that I am not a Harry Potter fan. I have an 8-year-old and we’ve already seen the first movie and I am sure the others will come in time. I will set and watch them like a good mom, but it really isn’t my favorite as far as movie genres. But, I have a lot of respect for author J.K. Rowling. She has said her home life was not easy when she was growing up, she was refused admission to Oxford University, and her mother suffered from multiple sclerosis for ten years before dying from the … Continue reading

Who is Jane Goodall

Every Sunday in church, the children get a handout that makes them think about how to become better, more caring people. Today’s handout listed four individuals that parents were to tell their children about. There was the Dalai Lama, Caesar Chavez, Rosa Parks, and Jane Goodall. We talked about all four, but as I was explaining who each was, I wondered how many adults know who Jane Goodall is. Goodall has spent the last 45 years of her life working with chimpanzees and it all started with a gift from her father. When Goodall was young, her father gave her … Continue reading

Who is Rachel Carson and Why Should We Care?

Personally, I had never heard of Rachel Carson until about a month ago. I was reading The Week (an excellent news magazine that I highly recommend) and there are always two book reviews in each issue. One was for “On a Farther Shore: The Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson.“ (This image or recording is the work of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee, taken or made during the course of an employee’s official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.) In the review, I learned that Carson was a … Continue reading

George Clooney – Humanitarian

Really George Clooney? You are already extremely talented (having an Oscar to attest to that), incredibly good looking (having left behind him a string of beauties and he is currently dating statuesque WWE Diva Stacy Keibler), and now continues to be unbelievable giving. If he wasn’t so lovable and charming, we would surely all hate him. This time, Clooney has auctioned off his beloved 2008 Tesla “Signature 100” Roaster for charity. He said the car, with only 1,825 miles, was a joy to drive, but he loves something else even more – helping make the world a better place. Clooney’s … Continue reading

Vegetarian Athletes

Athletes are normally very particular about their bodies and what they put in them. After all, without healthy bodies, it is hard to do what they do. But, I realized there are quite a few athletes that eat a strictly vegetarian diet. Some people wonder if a no meat diet is good for you. It certainly hasn’t done these athletes any harm: Bill Pearl Pearl is a four-time Mr. Universe. He didn’t become a vegetarian until he was 39, but guess what? He won his final Mr. Universe two years later, at age 41. Bode Miller Skiier Miller not only … Continue reading

More Green Athletes

Yesterday I was blogging about green athletes and I realized there were way more than I knew about, so this turned into a two-part blog. Competitive swimmer Natalie Coughlin needs minerals and vitamins to give her energy, especially during the Olympics. How does she get it? By having her own chickens lay fresh eggs and growing vegetables in her own garden. It’s not only Olympic athletes who try to live green though. NFL linebacker Will Witherspoon, an animal lover, raises Animal Welfare Approved grass-fed cattle. He spoke before Congress against the practice of feeding farm animals antibiotics. NFL fullback Ovie … Continue reading

Green Athletes

I have blogged about green celebrities, green musicians, and green models, but there are also plenty of green athletes in the world. First, since the London Olympics are still fresh on everyone’s mind, let’s take a look at a few green Olympians. No doubt you heard the name Usain Bolt a few million times during the London Olympics. Okay, maybe not quite that much, but the self-proclaimed Fastest Man of Earth’s name was certainly mentioned a lot. Bolt took home gold in the 100 m, 200 m, and 2×100 m relay. But, he also serves at the ambassador of culture/sport … Continue reading

Celebrity Vegans – Part 3

And my final installment of celebrity vegans. Here’s a few actors left over from the last blog plus a hodgepodge of others: Casey Affleck – Ben Affleck’s younger brother is also an animal rights activist who decided to go vegan. Woody Harrelson – How could anyone as green as Harrelson not be a vegan? He committed to the diet at the fairly young age of 24. He credits it with providing him with more energy and glowing skin. Ted Danson – Harrelson’s co-star on “Cheers,” Danson, an environmentalist, just recently became a vegan in an attempt to naturally lower his … Continue reading
