Good Charlotte Fights Hunger

I’ve written about Feeding America before. They are the organization that united with the postal workers one Saturday each year to collect canned and dry goods for the hungry. Actor David Arquette is the chairman of Feeding America’s Entertainment Council. Now, band Good Charlotte has joined Feeding America to “bar hunger.” I put that in quotes because, yes, the organization is trying to end hunger, but it is a bit of a play on words. Now, when you purchase specially marked Snicker bars, you can text the code on the wrapper and the company, through Feeding America, will provide two … Continue reading

All About ONE

No, I am not talking about the Three Dog Night song or the Purina food, ONE is a organization that aims to fight poverty and disease around the world, but particularly in Africa. Africa is a place hit hard by disease, especially diseases that could easily be prevented. ONE began in 2002 when Bono of U2, Sir Bob Geldof, Bobby Shriver, Jamie Drummond, and Lucy Matthew founded DATA (debt, AIDS, trade, Africa). This organization was developed to reduce Africa’s debt, help fight its poverty, provide AIDS treatment and prevention for its people, and end unfair trade rules. DATA had offices … Continue reading

The Sierra Club

Today, I went to an Eco Expo in our town (Memphis). It wasn’t quite as big as I had hoped, but it was nice and there were a lot of great vendors there. One of the ones I found was the Sierra Club. I had always heard about the Sierra Club but really had no idea who they were, so I grabbed some of their literature. If you think people having been concerned about conserving nature for a while now, you are wrong. The Sierra Club has been around since 1892. Its mission is “to explore, enjoy, and protect the … Continue reading

Who is Zach Bonner and why is he Marching across America?

The other day when I was browsing the Internet, I ran across an article about Zach Bonner. Zach is a 12-year-old from Tampa, Florida, but he is no ordinary 6th grader. Zach has been giving and volunteering almost his entire life. He began doing volunteer work when he was just six-years-old by helping the children affected by Hurricane Charley. He collected supplies such as tarps and water in his little red wagon. By the age of seven, Zach and his mom decided to create their own organization, Little Red Wagon Foundation, to help children in poverty and raise awareness of … Continue reading

This Saturday is Stamp Out Hunger Day

This Saturday, your letter carrier, i.e. mailperson, will pick up canned goods and non-perishable food items for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has been doing this for 18 years now. This year, Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with them in what is the largest single-day food drive in the country. The letter carriers do this every May to help stock of the food pantries, which often run short of food during the summer. Despite hard times, the letter carriers collected 73.4 million pounds of food last year. The U.S. Department of … Continue reading

Alec Loorz and Kids vs. Global Warming

I always find it touching when I read about young people who are so concerned about environmental issues that they do something. Alec Loorz, a sophomore at El Camino High School in Ventura, Cali, is one of those young people trying to make a difference. Alec saw the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth when he was 12 years old. The film touched him so much that he applied to be one of the certified presenters to give the slideshow about the film. However, Alec’s application was rejected, perhaps because of his age. But, he wasn’t going to give up … Continue reading

Ellen DeGeneres Becomes a Comic Book Hero

She is a talk show host, she’s an “American Idol” judge, and now Ellen DeGeneres is a comic book hero. You may have known for years that Ellen is a loyal advocate of animal rights. She has supported the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, the Farm Sanctuary, Heifer International, the Society for Animal Protective Legislation, and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). She helped in getting California’s Proposition 2, which prohibited abusive confinement of farm animals, passed in 2008. DeGeneres is now being featured in the Bluewater Productions’ comic book series, Female Force. The comic book talks about … Continue reading

Sharing Your Old Shoes

I like it when I stumble upon a story about regular people making a difference, so when read about Greg Woodburn and Jennifer Pierce, I knew I had to blog about them. Greg is a sophomore at the University of Southern California. He ran track in high school, but knee and hip injuries forced him to quit. He wasn’t happy that he had to quit running, but his parents, Woody and Lisa, pointed out that some kids can’t run because they don’t even have running shoes. That point stuck with Greg. He began collecting castoff shoes of family and friends, … Continue reading
