Others Serving Up a Warm Thanksgiving Dinner

Yesterday, I blogged about celebrities taking time to serve up a Thanksgiving dinner to the needy. But, celebrities weren’t the only ones giving up their time and money to serve those who were hungry. In Albany, New York, Equinox, a community service organization, offer up its 42nd annual Thanksgiving dinner to about 9,000 people. About 500 showed up at the First Presbyterian Church to eat while another 8,500 meals were delivered to homebound residents. About 3,500 volunteers showed up to help prepare the meal which included almost 7,000 pounds of turkey, almost 3,000 pounds of potatoes, 2,350 pounds of green … Continue reading

If you are like me, you are probably still stuffed from eating too much Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. That is, unless you’ve been fighting crowds since 4 a.m. this morning for Black Friday, then you might have worked a bit off. Some celebrities decided to give back to the community this week to celebrate the holidays. Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne were among the celebrities at the 75th anniversary Thanksgiving dinner for the Los Angeles Mission on Wednesday. Each year, the Los Angeles Mission offers a hot Thanksgiving dinner to those who are homeless or hungry. Chef Roy Choi brought … Continue reading

October 20th is Spirit Day

Not long ago, I blogged about It Gets Better, an organization to help fight against bullying of LGBT teens and young adults. Many LGBT teens and young adults have committed suicide recently after bullying and abuse by peers. To help further raise awareness, October 20th has been declared Spirit Day by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan. Last year was the first observance, but since then, many organizations such as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and many celebrities are donning purple to show their support. The color and name was derived from the rainbow flag. In the flag, the … Continue reading

The Climate Reality Project

“24 Hours of Reality will focus the world’s attention on the full truth, scope, scale and impact of the climate crisis. To remove the doubt. Reveal the deniers. And catalyze urgency around an issue that affects every one of us.” –Al Gore I was watching “50 Documentaries to See Before You Die” today because…well, I love documentaries. One of the top 50 was Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, which I have not seen yet. During a break, a commercial ran for The Climate Reality Project and I had to dig a bit deeper into that to see exactly what it … Continue reading

Earth Day 2011

It’s spring and it’s time for Earth Day again. April 22 was named Earth Day by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. By 1990, it went international and it is coordinated now by Earth Day Network. The United Nations (U.N.) designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day in 2009. Why April 22? Actually, many communities celebrate the entire week, known as Earth Week. Senator Nelson felt that was a good time to maximize the day for college campuses. It didn’t interfere with exams or spring holidays, but the time was late enough in the year for the weather to … Continue reading

World Water Day – 2011

It’s World Water Day again. Every March 22 since 1993 has been officially declared World Water day by the United Nations (U.N.). I know that I take clean water for granted. I turn on my tap and out it pours. Well, at least we hope it is clean. But imagine if we had a natural disaster on the scales of that Japan just had – would we be able to get clean water? Now imagine having to live with that thought every day, even though no natural disaster has occurred. More than one billion people don’t have access to drinkable … Continue reading
