Chick-fil-A War Continues

To eat at Chick-fil-A or not? Suddenly, THAT is the question. The whole outrage against or support for (depending on your views) Chick-fil-A thing continues. The whole thing started when Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy told Baptist Press in an interview that the company is against gay marriage. Naturally, that made some celebs (Ed Helms being the latest to voice his opinion) call for a boycott. Several LGBT groups also called for boycotts. Philadelphia City Councilman James Kenney said, “There is no place for this type of hate in our great City of Brotherly and Sisterly Affection.” Boston Mayor Thomas Menino … Continue reading

Sally Ride Dies

Okay, you are probably reading my headline going “Why is this under Green Living?” But let me explain… Astronaut Sally Ride died last Monday after a seventeen-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. However, she leaves behind a huge legacy. Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983 when she was a member of the Space Shuttle Challenger. She was also the first woman to use a robotic arm, which was then used to retrieve a satellite. Ride went up in the Challenger again in 1984 and all in all, she spent 343 hours in space. As … Continue reading

Human Trafficking in America – Part 2

Yesterday, I was talking about human trafficking. Like many, I turned a blind eye to this until I saw statistics that just wouldn’t allow me to do that anymore. Is there anything you can do to prevent human trafficking? First of all, know that it is real and happening in our country. Second, you can recognize the signs of a possible victim. These people act like they are under someone else’s control and feel as if they are under surveillance. They work long hours for little pay, yet don’t manage their own money. They may not know English and may … Continue reading

Human Trafficking in America – Part 1

I saw a commercial for a local news station the other night about human trafficking right. I missed the newscast (as I often do – on purpose because it is just generally depressing), but today, I saw the article on the news web site and decided to read it. A local woman claimed she was a victim of human trafficking racket here in my hometown of Memphis. Now, I’ll admit, I read this with some skepticism. She claimed that at age 18, a “friend” sold her into a commercial sex ring. One night she went to a party house with … Continue reading

Stars Call for Chick-fil-A Boycott

If you’ve ever drive by a Chick-fil-A on a Sunday, you have probably noticed it is closed. Chick-fil-A believes that employees deserve Sundays off, but this also follows along the company’s Christian values. These values must pay off in some way. To me at least, it seems like everyone that works at Chick-fil-A is friendly and happier than the average fast food worker. But, that being said, some celebrities have a problem with the company and have called for a boycott. Ed Helms, of NBC’s “The Office,” is the latest in a string of celebs to condemn the company for … Continue reading

The Plight of Burma – Part 2

Burma is a country in trouble. The economy isn’t good, the government is new, and it is under sanctions by many countries for human rights violations. To add to all that, many of the countries soldiers are children. Although Burma is a country trying desperately to clean up its act, problems remain. Child Soldiers International, a non-profit United Kingdom organization, is reporting that both military and civilian “brokers” search for children on the streets. When they find ones that can have their papers forged to show they are 18, they make these vulnerable children soldiers. How do you leave the … Continue reading

The Plight of Burma – Part 1

I love Facebook. I have liked certain sites and every once in a while, a status gives me insight into things I either don’t know or haven’t thought of. Yesteday, it was a Mental Floss article about “modern” antiques, i.e. things today’s children have never seen. Boy, did I feel old when I saw #1 was a 45-rpm record adapter! However, today’s “Ah” moment on Facebook was not amusing. United to End Genocide posted that Burma has more child soldiers than any other country in the world. As a citizen of country where the majority of people try to protect … Continue reading

Casino Owner Strikes Again

The Las Vegas casino owner has stepped up again to help the needy. This is in addition to the recent anonymous $2 million gift to the United Way of Southern Nevada. In the past few months, 4,000 southern Nevada families have each received anonymous gifts of $500 each. For one man, LeRoy Stapleton, it meant gas money to help him go out and look for a job and provided hope of preventing homelessness. The first gifts started as $500 gift cards at Christmas 2011, but this past Saturday, 2,000 more families received the $500. A lot of the families who … Continue reading

Chuck Norris, Gays, and the Boy Scouts of America

You know all the Chuck Norris facts going around? Like behind “Chuck Norris’ beard is another fist.” Or, “Chuck Norris counted to infinity – twice.” How about “Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.” Although I’ve always thought of myself as a Bruce Lee girl, these always make me giggle. His 40+ year career as an actor and martial artist along with these Chuck Norris facts cause TIME to proclaim Norris an “online cult hero” in 2006. Too bad he showed a less than heroic attitude today in … Continue reading

A Pastor Said What? – Part 2

Yesterday, I blogged about Pastor Charles Worley’s recent sermon on homosexuals. He wanted them fenced in a camp where they couldn’t reproduce with the thinking that eventually they would “die out.” It just makes my heart heavy as the sermon continued with, “They say that you’re gonna get in trouble with the government. Well, I just want ‘yuns to know that I like that bubble gum stuff, so bring it to me. And I like sunflower seeds, so bring me some of them, because if you have to go to jail for preaching the word of God – someone told … Continue reading
