The Movie “Five” Part 1

Last night I watched the Lifetime Movie “Five” and normally I would not watch these type of movies because they usually make me cry. I had to watch it last night because I have had it taped on my DVR since it aired but we are getting a new cable service today so it was watch it or miss the chance. Now if you have not heard about the movie it was a group of 5 short fills directed by 5 different women including Jennifer Anniston and Demi Moore. These short films follow five families impacted by breast cancer. The … Continue reading

Governmental Funding

I just received a call from one of my friends who is concerned that her sister may have developed breast cancer and does not know what to do. The sister is unemployed and uninsured like so many American’s today should that be enough to worry about? Should she have to worry about affording a diagnostic mammogram? She went to a doctor who said well if you were my wife I would have you seen this week! Well we can send men into space but we cannot provide a potentially lifesaving test to everyone who needs it? Should a woman have … Continue reading

Race For A Cure

Next week is the Dallas County Race for A Cure and for the second year in a row I cannot participate because of my injured foot. This may not seem like a big deal but it is really is inspiring for me to go and see the sea of pink survivor shirts. I do not know what it is about the boost of energy and positive feelings I get when I go but it is a feeling like no other. The feelings of hope that I get when I walk on to the site is like no other. If you … Continue reading

NFL Goes Pink

So as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness month the NFL is showing their support of breast cancer patients and research by turning pink in their “Crucial Catch” campaign. When you look watch the games for the month of October you will notice something that you don’t usually see on professional football player’s uniforms; they all have pink on some part of their uniforms. Being a breast cancer survivor seeing these rough and tough men showing their support of the women and men affected by this disease makes me smile. How often do you see professional athletes wearing pink? We … Continue reading

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month !

So it is October again so that means it is breast cancer awareness month! Now for a breast cancer survivor like me every month is breast cancer awareness I don’t think a week has passed without thinking about it. I used to think about it all day every day so once a week is a big improvement for me. When October comes around have you noticed everything turns pink? I was driving by a feed store today and they have pink canopies outside, pink balloons even the dog food bags were pink. Now it is great that breast cancer is … Continue reading

When Does The Worries Stop?

I don’t know if this next statement is true for all cancer survivors or if it is just me. Whenever I get an ache or a pain or if I have to have any medical procedure I am convinced that the cancer has come back. I don’t know if you remember but the year before my cancer diagnosis my husband had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. His was caught very early and he had the tumor removed and went through 33 days of radiation and has been cancer free for 7 years now. I mention my husband today and his … Continue reading

Something I Find Interesting

I was doing some research today trying to think what I wanted to write about and found the most interesting things about cancer, the ages of diagnosis, and the rates of occurrence and death broken down by the types of cancer. I found all this information on the Center for Disease Controls website. I am totally surprised when I looked at the map of the United States and see that the New England and both coasts of the US have a higher rate of breast cancer and the southern states have a lower rate of breast cancer. I grew up … Continue reading

Growth Hormones

Do you think Breast Cancer is on the rise for younger women? When I was younger I thought it was an older person’s disease. Anytime you heard about it, and you really did not too often, it was with an older person. Now since I got the diagnosis I have found that I am hearing more and more about women my age developing breast cancer. Now either when I was younger I thought 40 was way old or this awful disease is affecting more and more people at a younger and younger age. There are many thoughts as to why … Continue reading

Who To Tell

When you hear that you have cancer one of the things that go through your head is how do I tell my family and friends? I was really hesitant to tell some friends that I knew way back when about the big c because I did not want their attitude and feelings towards me to change. Is that weird? Like if I take a trip back to where I grew up will my old friends look at me different or treat me different because I had cancer? Will people who were not my friends be nice to me now just … Continue reading

Do I Have A Scarlet C?

I have noticed that since I got the cancer diagnosis that people see the cancer diagnosis and not just plain me. Unless I have my shirt off you can’t see the changes that cancer has done to me so what is it about me that has changed so much that people change how they treat me? How can I convince people that I am much more than a cancer diagnosis, a source for cancer information? How do I get people to see beyond the diagnosis and just see me? Don’t get me wrong if I find out about people that … Continue reading
