Review: The Phonetic Zoo

Ever since my daughter was in Kindergarten she has struggled with spelling. We had a few good years due to a great curriculum and active hands on word studies. However, as she hit the junior high level she was no longer interested in spelling games yet still lacked spelling skills. She is a very intelligent girl but spelling is not her forte. I thought that she would simply have to live out the rest of her life as a poor speller. After all, I know plenty of people who have resigned themselves to be poor spellers. My daughter, now in … Continue reading

Hard to Find Homeschool Resource: Creative Writing

I recently asked homeschoolers what resources they were looking for but unable to find online. One response was that creative writing resources have been difficult to find. Apparently, homeschool students are looking for websites that cover Creative Writing. It is true that there isn’t much in the area of creative writing available for homeschoolers, but if you think out of the box you will still find some creative writing resources that you can use. Here is what I uncovered: The Crafty Writer’s Creative Writing Course can be a self led creative writing course or you can pay a small fee … Continue reading

Homeschool Resource Review: Spelling City

I spent the morning preparing my daughters spelling lessons for the summer. She is working on spelling this summer because I do not want her using poor spelling as an excuse any longer. She likes to do a half-hearted approach to her spelling and say, “I’m just a poor speller”. For this reason, I searched many books (and even purchased a couple). I also searched several websites. The program I found most suited to her spelling needs was SpellingCity.com. Spellingcity.com is designed to make spelling fun. Students can type their spelling lists, test themselves, learn correct pronunciation, and play word … Continue reading

Books for Homeschoolers, in Review: Vocabulary Cartoons

Before I began homeschooling years ago, I read about 30 books on homeschooling and related subjects. From the time I made the decision to homeschool in January, until I started in June, I had read enough to feel like I knew what I was doing. The first book I am going to review for you is for both homeschoolers and traditionally schooled kids alike. Even adults will enjoy it. It is called, Vocabulary Cartoons. The book, Vocabulary Cartoons, claims that your children will “learn a word a minute and never forget it.” The book is exactly as described in the … Continue reading

A Slanguage Activity From Down Under.

As a fun activity, see if you can work out what these ridiculously Australian sentences mean. I’ve left a space under each sentence so that you can rewrite the sentence in your way of speaking. Have you printed out the list of words from Aussie Slanguage? I think you’ll need it to understand what’s being said. Fair dinkum, this is fun. When you visit us in Australia, if you can understand this, she’ll be apples, mate! 1) Hey, mate! Come along to our barbie this arvo. We’ve got some chook, and some bloke’s sheila is going to cook up the … Continue reading

Aussie Slanguage. An English Language Lesson from Down Under.

English is a hard language to learn. There are many words that sound the same, but are spelt differently and have different meanings, like “here” and “hear” or “bye” and “buy”. Depending on where you live in the world, the English words you use to describe something can be different too; like sweet and lollie. Thank goodness I grew up speaking English and have not had to learn it as a second language. I think I would have failed because it is too hard for me to work it all out sometimes! Australian English is a great example of speakers … Continue reading

Homeschooling Days: The Family Journal & Writing

Welcome to the second blog in our series Homeschooling Days. We’re talking about different activities in our days that we add to make home schooling more exciting, or rewarding for our kids. This is the place for our brilliant teaching strategies and I just want to remind everyone to feel free to add their insight to our forum. Today, we’ll talk about ways to inspire our creative writers. Ways to Kill the Desire to Write I find it hard to talk about ways to encourage budding writers without talking about what discourages them. One sure fire way to squash the … Continue reading
