Unschooling – Unschooling is also called student led education and means that the child controls what he or she would learn. When the child shows interest in a topic, the parents would provide resources that will help them. Unschooling is often dismissed as being irresponsible or negligent, but when combined with unit studies or done responsibly, unschooling is incredibly successful. Many homeschoolers do not use unschooling out of fear that their child will have educational holes (will not learn some important lessons). Teacher – A teacher in traditional education is a person who is educated and trained to teach and handle a class of children. Homeschoolers are criticized for not being trained teachers even though they take on the teacher’s role. Teacher’s Notebook – A teacher’s notebook is used to keep attendance, lesson plan information and test results. Many homeschoolers find teachers notebooks to be a handy resource. Many new homeschooling families begin homeschooling with the school-at-home method. Scope & Sequence – Scope & sequence information is usually provided by the publisher to inform the parent what is taught in the text or program. All of these items need to be considered when planning a curriculum for your child.
