New Jersey Legislature Turns on Homeschoolers

As of right now, and for quite some time New Jersey has the state where all homeschoolers wish they lived. There have been NO homeschool regulations in that state and the only laws written on paper, are more about what you need to do If someone accuses you of educational abuse. Read: Homeschooling in New Jersey Recently, two members of New Jersey’s State Assembly have introduced a bill the following: They propose that parents: 1) Be given a deadline to register with their local school; 2) Turn in an outline of educational objectives by subject; 3) Certify that children have … Continue reading

Update on Loss of Accredition of Clayton County GA Schools

In my article “Clayton County GA Parents Should Look into Homeschooling”, I wrote about the possibility of the loss of accreditation of the county’s public schools. Unfortunately, the nightmare has happened. Clayton County GA schools officially do not have accreditation. This means loss of scholarship opportunities. This means loss of college opportunities. This means the diplomas of these public school students is not worth any more than a homeschool diploma! GASP! Hmmmmm. Sounds like a good reason to homeschool. At this point, Homeschooling is leaps and bounds better than going to public school in this county. After all, homeschoolers can … Continue reading

Homeschoolers at a distinct disadvantage?

This was the title of an op-ed opinion written by an A/P English language teacher after the homeschooler-Pasco County meeting mentioned last week that few homeschoolers actually attended. “Trust us” was the message loud and clear from the parents attending the Hernando County School District’s outreach meeting to homeschoolers. We know what is best for our children. Unfortunately, when confronted with some “facts” concerning the success of home schooling for high school age children their response was not academic concern, but complete denial. Silly me, I thought these parents were truly concerned with excellence in education. Someone was in denial … Continue reading

Reports of Homeschooling are Greatly Exaggerated

Las Vegas Eyewitness News reported that more students are hitting the books online. They called it homeschooling. To be more specific, the report said, “Until recently, parents choosing to home school their children felt isolated — alone not only in their belief that it would be a better choice for their family, but also because there were precious few resources to help them. But that’s not the case anymore” And “Fifth grader Pierce and third grader Sierra are enrolled at the Nevada Connections Academy. NCA is an online public charter school accredited by the Nevada Department of Education. …”We have … Continue reading

An Effort to Court Florida Homeschoolers Falls Short

“Pasco County (Florida) teacher Mike Maynard also stood at the podium and told parents their children would receive a better education in public schools — a statement that sent a rumble of angry laughter through the crowd.”(Tampa Tribune) Florida schools are not being shy about trying to get homeschoolers to come back to school. The parents of 760 homeschooled students in Pasco County were invited to a meeting last Thursday in an effort to woo the families back into public school. Fewer than 30 parents attended the meeting, and they were not in a good mood. Many parents scolded the … Continue reading

Homeschoolers Prevail in the Subway Debacle

If you are a homeschooler, you are very likely aware of the Subway essay writing contest that snubbed homeschoolers this summer. I first wrote about it in May soon after the contest was released. The point of the contest is for children to write an essay related to topics the sandwich store has put forth and to possibly win gym equipment, a gift basket, and a Subway Card. When the contest was released, “No Homeschoolers Allowed” was posted prominently on the flyers and websites. If the purpose of the contest was to write essays, Subway soon found out what great … Continue reading

Tax Credits for Homeschoolers in the News Again

U.S. Senator David Vitter introduced a bill earlier this month to provide tax relief for homeschooling families. The bills would allow tax deductions of $500.00 per child with a yearly limit of $2,000.00 for K-12 activities. The bill (S 3076 IS) would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. It is currently in the first step of the legislative process meaning it is still in committee. It has been read twice and referred to the Senate Committee on Finance. His reasoning is that parents of private schools get tax credits, so homeschool parents should as well. I can find no … Continue reading

Homeschool Legal Defense Association Stands against Obama

There has been a buzz on the internet lately about Obama and The Home School Legal Defense Association, but it has nothing to do with an endorsement. It seems that in an effort to reach your Evangelical Christians, Obama’s campaign is attempting to launch a program call Joshua Generation Project. The purpose of this project is to reach young people on poverty, Darfur, climate, and war. This campaign will never make it public, or at least in its current incarnation as The Homeschool Legal Defense has accused them of infringing on their group “Generation Joshua” that works with Christian youth … Continue reading

An Entire Georgia County Could Turn to Homeschooling

I recently wrote an article entitled Clayton County GA Parents Should Look into Homeschooling I do not think I really believed that an entire school district might have no other choice than to actually turn to homeschooling. “The uncertainty has parents flooding waiting lists for private schools, signing up for home schooling and looking at renting apartments in other counties so their children can attend another district.” Even less fortunate than the fact that the schools could lose accreditation is the fact that the districts problems are more board and personality related than education related. Clayton county schools were actually … Continue reading

Why So Many Parents Homeschool “Problem” Children

A teacher of a five year old boy is recorded calling the child “pathetic”, “selfish”, and “ignorant” and discouraging other kids from being his friend. The teachers union saying that the teacher’s rights have been violated. A Kindergarten teacher stands one child in front of the classroom and one by one has them tell him what they don’t like about him and have them vote on whether or not he deserves to be in the classroom. The teacher is unapologetic. Both of these incidents hit the national news in the past month. What is worse than these incidents is the … Continue reading
