You’ve probably heard about homeschool seminars, possibly even some taking place in your area. Are they really worthwhile? Can they really help you? A homeschool seminar can be valuable to you in the following ways: You can connect with other homeschoolers in your area and feel the support that comes from being one of many in a crowd, instead of one weird person on your street. You can take classes to get new ideas in areas where you might be feeling in a rut. You can strengthen your skills in areas where you might not feel the most creative or … Continue reading

My Favorite Discount Online Homeschool Store

As a one income family with four kids, I’m sure you can do the math and figure I look for deals. As much as I love a good deal, I refuse to cut back on the quality of education I provide for my children. I am willing to cut back on bills and expenses as much as possible, however, cutting back on my kids’ education never occurred to me. My goal is to provide the best education possible. While, I understand that my budget will determine some of what I buy it should not rule what I buy. Therefore, I … Continue reading

New Homeschool Curriculum for Writing: Time4Writing

It is no secret that Time4Learning has been one of my favorite online curriculums for elementary school students. I liked it because it is interactive and teaches language arts, math, science, and social studies to pre-kindergarten through middle school children. The program fully prepared my kids to be able to hit the ground running when they transitioned into taking local co-op type classes. It also made the learning process fun. Time4Learning now had a new sister online curriculum called Time4Writing which focuses of teaching students writing skills. Time4writing was created in response to parental requests for writing tutorials. There are … Continue reading

Homeschooling Resource of the Day: HomeSchoolViewTube.com

I just found out about a new website for homeschoolers called Homeschoolviewtube.com. It is a cross between Youtube, Facebook, and MySpace for homeschoolers. It is a social network, a video uploading site, and a place for homeschooling parents to connect, face to face …kind of. This is important because Facebook has purposely excluded homeschoolers, although they allow adults unaffiliated with any school. There are also Christian videos and amateur entertainment by and for homeschoolers. This is great for me because I had to stop putting videos on YouTube because I did not want to deal with the absolute hatred from … Continue reading

Homeschool Resource of the Day: No Fear Shakespeare

I stumbled across mention of this site while reading a teachers blog. The teacher was struggling with getting kids to read Shakespeare and was also dealing with the fact that a previous teacher had given students “American Shakespeare” because original Shakespeare was “stupid”. “American Shakespeare” I thought. What is that? Therefore, I did some investigation and came across the site No Fear Shakespeare. No Fear Shakespeare is a website that translates the plays of Shakespeare into modern American English. It is a subsidiary of Spark Notes and is a free resource that students can use to understand Shakespeare or to … Continue reading

Some Websites Homeschoolers Should Know About

Every once in awhile I have to take time to note new homeschooling resources. . .or at least resources that are new to me. Generally I like to place them in a theme, but I have recently discovered three very cool websites that I thought were worth mentioning. I hope you find them as useful as I have. Library Elf Most homeschoolers I know, use the library for at least part of their curriculum. I know that we rely heavily on library books to fill out our literature based curriculum. Not to mention the fact that most libraries have numerous … Continue reading

You Get Teacher Rewards Too

Businesses love to support teachers. Especially businesses whose products might appeal to teachers. Giving them a discount means they’ll come back again, and again, and again. Barnes and Noble, Staples and Lakeshore Learning are just a few in my area that support teachers. . .and homeschoolers. Yep, you read that right. Most businesses that offer teacher rewards do not discriminate against homeschoolers. They are happy to extend their teaching rewards, which generally include 10% off, or a discount after purchasing a certain amount, to homeschoolers. How Do I Know if a Business Offers Discounts to Teachers? Just ask! Some companies, … Continue reading

Top 5 Homeschooling Resource: Online Learning Games

It has been awhile since I’ve posted a resource blog and I must apologize. My goal is to do resource blogs often during the week and yet somehow with the craziness of Christmas, it just didn’t happen. Today’s resource includes our favorite places to go for online learning games. I use online learning games as a means to keep one child busy while I’m working with another child. However, I know some homeschoolers that use them to teach and of course that’s great too! 1. I Know That I just discovered this site. It is simply full of online learning … Continue reading
