Do Chores Have a Place in Homeschooling?

It seems that there is somewhat of a divide in the home schooling community on the issue of chores. I recently was talking to a mom who said, “I’d rather teach my daughter how to hire good help, than have her actually do housework.” I have to be honest and say that I was a little taken aback by that statement for numerous reasons, but she’s not the first person I’ve spoken to that seems to have that attitude. In part, I think it stems from the fact that home schooling mothers work full time teaching. On top of that, … Continue reading

Organizing and Storing Homeschooling Materials

In Setting Up a Space for Homeschooling, Valorie discusses having a room specifically for homeschooling. I agree with her that having a room specifically for homeschooling would be a wonderful option, if you have room in the house for it. Sadly I don’t, and neither do a lot of other people including her. As she said, just because you have a room designated for homeschooling doesn’t mean you have to do all of your homeschooling in that room. If I had a room for homeschooling, its main purpose would be to have all of our homeschooling items in one place. … Continue reading

Setting Up a Space for Homeschooling

I have a friend that swears that everyone needs to have a homeschooling classroom. She has one and her kids do all of their school work in their basement in the homeschooling classroom. We do not have a home schooling classroom so obviously I don’t think it’s a necessity. Or at least it’s not as important to me as everyone having a place to sleep! Last week I wrote an article about the Smiths. . .friends of mine who set up their house so they’d have a couple of rooms for school. Someone asked for photos and I’m sad to … Continue reading

Balancing Homeschooling Lessons and Chores (part 2)

In part 1 of Balancing Homeschooling Lessons and Chores I wrote about how dealing with an extra messy home (because of the fact we homeschool) can interfere with learning time. I presented some issues I have as well as possible solutions: I have more: Problem 3: Too many chores. As I wrote down the list, I had to admit I was expecting too much from my 10 and 12-year-old kids. There is just so much a kid can get done in an hour, and I feel that any more than 2 hours a day spent on chores is just way … Continue reading

Balancing Homeschooling Lessons and Chores (part 1)

Having kids home all the time can get quite messy. Even with the help of a housekeeper, I still need to assign a lot of chores. I have found, however that lots of chores can get in the way of completing lessons. Just this morning I created new chore charts for my children so their responsibilities will be less ambiguous. I go by the school of thought that they know what is expected of them and it should be done without reminders. They however, obviously need reminding. As I wrote out what was expected of each child each day, I … Continue reading
