No Raise In Disability Insurance Benefits Next Year

Now is the time of year when letters will be sent to people who are currently getting Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. These letters will provide information about what to expect in regards to the amount of your benefit checks in the coming year. The letter my husband got was a bit disappointing this time around. My husband is legally blind, which means he qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. He is able to work part time, and the money he gets from his Disability Insurance is an incredibly helpful supplement to his income. It is something we rely … Continue reading

Why Limited-Benefit Health Insurance Is Bad

The upcoming changes in health care reform are going to make an impact on limited-benefit health insurance plans. The changes could cause many of these kinds of health insurance plans to stop existing. An argument going around in the news, and on the internet, states that it is better to have one of these limited-benefit health insurance plans than to have absolutely no form of health insurance at all. But, is that true? Limited-benefit health insurance plans, which are also sometimes referred to as mini-med plans, are health insurance policies that come with an annual limit, and many come with … Continue reading

Researching Additional Insurance

I am among the growing number of Americans who has absolutely no form of health insurance. Last year at around this time, I lost my job as a teacher’s aide. My job offered great health insurance! My husband and I were covered for medical, dental, and vision care. Like many other teachers in California, there was no indication that I was about to lose my job. Suddenly, in the course a single day, I went from being someone with a full time job with benefits, to someone who had no job, and no health insurance. Naturally, this was extremely stressful. … Continue reading

Car Insurance from My Alumni Association?

I never expected to open mail from an Alumni Association, and find an advertisement for car insurance. However, that is exactly what I found in my mailbox today. It was unexpected. Every once in a while, I get some kind of mail from the Alumni Association where I got my B.S. in Education several years ago. Sometimes, they send me a magazine like newsletter, that describes what some of the other people who graduated from the same university as me are up to now. I see marriage announcements of people I do not know. I am informed about the awesome … Continue reading

Beating the Odds During Wildfire

I have family and friends living in several areas of Southern California. Memories of my past went up in flames during the disaster we have witnessed this week. I know people who have lost everything. My brother faced evacuation Wednesday night. My sister-in-law wasn’t able to come home from work on Tuesday night, the main Interstate 15 was closed. As a child my family lived near Lake Arrowhead. During the early 1980’s my brother and ex-husband did a lot of the electrical construction work on hundreds of homes built in the new community of Rancho Bernardo. One day I hope … Continue reading

Back to School Left Over Piles of Paperwork

The back-to-school rush should be just about wrapped-up by now, Thank Goodness! All of the proper forms have been completed, signed and hopefully returned to the school. If you are anything like I am, there was one pile of papers which had to be returned and another pile of optional things to consider, like joining the PTA or purchasing Student Accident & Health Insurance. It’s just the right thing to go ahead and pay the dues to join the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) sometimes called the PTO for the Parent Teacher Organization. Paying the dues builds the organization and offers … Continue reading

House Fire Hero’s Cause Cancellation of Homeowner Insurance

Last October our local news in ran a story about a woman saved by her two Pit Bull Dogs from a house fire. Apparently she didn’t have working smoke detectors, and her dogs were responsible for saving her life when they alerted her and woke her up. I remember making a comment to my husband, that without the working smoke detectors, and owning the two Pit Bulls it was likely the insurance company for the home would cancel the insurance policy. Well, today I heard on the news the woman has received the notice and her Nationwide Homeowner Insurance policy … Continue reading

Mental Health and Insurance: Advocating for Makala

It’s been a long four-years since this picture was taken and we brought Makala and Jeremiah home to be our children. It required nearly two-years before we met them to complete the application for adoption, training as special needs parents, and have our home study done by the state. We chose to adopt special needs siblings from our state foster care system. Our lives were stable and we had experience raising Sean and Tori who were on their way to college. We wanted and worked hard to get into a position of making a huge change in the lives of … Continue reading

Insurance Permiums OR State Tax?

It’s a well-established fact most people don’t like insurance companies. Many people believe Insurance companies are out to get more then they need. Some people think insurance companies use mysterious methods to reach into the pockets of unsuspecting people and take money for unknown reasons. So it should be no surprise that the democratic tax and spend Governor of the state of Oregon, Ted Kulongoski (pronounced as: Governor “Tax And-Gouge-Me”) has decided insurance companies may as well do the dirty deed and collect some of the taxes to pay for services most people would assume should be covered by their … Continue reading
