An FHE For Small Children- Thanksgiving Lesson with a Twist

It seems that there is a popular story that I am just discovering as a parent called, The turkey with the terrible temper. It is all about teaching your children how to control their anger. I decided since it went along with the theme of turkeys, it would be a good topic to address the week of Thanksgiving. After all, my kids were talking about turkeys a lot anyway it seemed that week! But, I thought to put a twist on it, we would also talk about being thankful in the same lesson. This is what I came up with. … Continue reading

Family Home Evening For a New Arrival

Last night, we had a family home evening for the kiddos. My husband and I take turns because our kids are so little that they can’t really prepare a lesson yet. It was a simple one, but it was pertinent to our lives right now. When preparing a family home evening for kids that are so little, it is challenging. My son, who is 2 1/2 has a very short attention span these days. If it’s not making noise, a super hero, or flashing bright lights, he’s not interested. But, last night I was able to captivate them for a … Continue reading

Children Teach Us to Appreciate

Yesterday, for family home evening, we decided to talk about the earth, and how it was created. This is a simple topic for our 4 year old. I asked her what she knew about the earth. She said, that she knew that it, “turns, and circles around the sun, and that half of it is in the daytime, and half is in the night time” I was amazed at how much she already knew. I then asked her, “Do you know who created the earth?” She said, “Jesus”. Children do not take things for granted. Every day is a new … Continue reading

FHE with Small Children

We have recently started doing Family Home Evening. I was surprised (although I shouldn’t be) at how much my 4 year old just loved it. When you have young families, it is hard to get excited about family home evening. We know that it is a promise from our leaders that if we hold these special family “meetings” each week, that it will keep our family close together. Our family home evenings are very simple. We have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. The favorite part so far is leading the music. Even our two year old … Continue reading

An FHE Challenge

Yesterday in Sunday School we learned about Moses’ last sermon to the Children of Israel. We learned about the advice he gives them, about the phylacteries they wore, and the symbols they placed on their doorposts to remind them of their God. While we don’t wear these leather bands on our heads and arms, we aren’t so different today. Many LDS people wear symbols of their faith including CTR rings, Young Women medallions or scouting pins, and other visual reminders. Many of us also have visual reminders in our homes of our faith such as pictures, statues, and plaques. But … Continue reading

FHE: Focus on Family Time

Family home evening is a time to gather your family together each week. It is about more than teaching your family the gospel. This is an essential and important part of family home evening, but one of the most powerful things that family home evening does is that it draws your family together and makes them stronger. As you spend time together as a family focusing on the gospel and getting to know each other, you build bonds that last. These bonds can carry your children through their most difficult times. If you are having a difficult time holding family … Continue reading

Change Up Your Family Home Evenings

If family home evening time is becoming more difficult or a bit monotonous, it may be time to try a new routine to make the lessons more effective. Everyone loves change and changing up your family home evening lessons may make the night more effective for everyone in your family. One easy way to start is to find a new source for lesson material. If you have been using the same manual find a new one. If you have been using the church magazines, try using a manual. You can even come up with lesson ideas and stories on your … Continue reading

Make Family Home Evening Happen

Family home evening is a time to gather your children and to teach them the gospel each week. It is also a time to create a strong family bond and lasting memories. It should be a positive experience each week, and it is important that we put every effort into having family home evening on a regular basis. It is easy to allow other things to interfere with our family home evening lessons. It is important to make family home evening the priority. This means scheduling one night a week when that happens. The church recommends Monday nights, but sometimes … Continue reading

Monday Nights in Nauvoo – Janet Burningham

How cool is this? With the focus this year on Joseph Smith, it only makes sense that we would undertake a deeper study of his background, surroundings, and lifestyle. “Monday Nights in Nauvoo” is a great family home evening resource book that centers the lessons around life in Nauvoo, particularly on elements of Church history. Now your family can study Church history together at home as well as at church. Each lesson begins with the background of the lesson, which ties it in to Church history. We are also told what pictures from the Gospel Art Kit would coordinate with … Continue reading
