It is fall and that means it is time for football. I grew up in the home of a diehard Cougar football fan. My dad is such a fan that last week he forced himself back to work after recovering from pneumonia so that he could attend the football game without any argument from my mom. While I love BYU football and basketball, it is difficult for me to keep up with it in North Carolina, especially since my husband is not a huge fan. However there is a great site that allows you to keep up with not only … Continue reading

BYU Squares Off Against the U

Today is the all-important BYU versus U of U football game. It really is a big deal. Sadly I cannot watch it because the house I am at for the weekend does not receive the station. For those of who grew up in Utah or as diehard BYU fans you may understand what I am talking about. For those of who do no follow football or care nothing for either of the teams then this blog will not matter to you. I grew up in a household with a true blue all the way through BYU football fan—my dad. He … Continue reading

BYU Football

My dad is one die-hard Cougar fan. Every year he purchases ticket to the BYU football games. For this reason as the cool weather approaches, my memory wanders back to the days of sitting in the stands, and watching the football game progress. I went to my first football game before I was a year old. Of course I do not remember it, but my mom said she spent most of the time wandering through the stadium, because I wasn’t happy. As I grew older I have memories that I will never forget. I loved looking across the stadium to … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 4

7. As a husband, what is the greatest measure of your success? That my wife loves me and I’m still madly in love with her. We’ve just passed that threshold where we’ve spent over half of our lives with each other. She was 18 and I was 21 when we met and married. Today, she’s 40 and I’m 43. We’ll celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary in July. I’m sometimes amazed that we married so young, but that’s just part of the culture in the Church. When a young man returns from his mission, he’s counseled to marry and start a … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 3

I don’t about you, but I’m inspired by the strength, humility and righteousness of this man – I know I already mentioned it before, but hey, it bears repeating again. Here is more of his interview. 5. You served a mission in South Dakota, predominantly among the peoples of the Sioux Nation. Can you share some experiences of what that was like and how it helped you to grow? When I left on my mission in February of ’82, I had played two seasons for BYU. As an 18-year-old freshman, I returned a punt 83 yards in the 1980 SMU … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 2

And so we continue our interview with Vai Sikahema with questions on his chosen professions. 3. You’ve had great success in your chosen professions, first as a football player and now as a sportscaster. You played on a national championship team (BYU 1984), you played for the NFL and now you are a successful sportscaster for NBC in the Philadelphia area. What do you think has played the largest role in your successes and why? I suspect because my parents didn’t have a college education, and they constantly shared with us their frustration of having to work menial jobs – … Continue reading

Interview with NBC’s East Coast Sportscaster, Vai Sikahema – Part 1

Vai is a very dear friend and old college buddy of my husband’s, consequently he is a very dear friend of mine. He agreed to do this interview, I am certain, out of friendship. From NBC10’s website we catch up with what Vai has been doing since leaving college, professionally: “Vai Sikahema, sports director/anchor for NBC 10 News at 4, 5, 6 and 11pm, joined WCAU in April 1994. Sikahema is also the host of “Wednesday’s Child,” a segment sponsored by the National Adoption Center, Freddie Mac Foundation, and NBC 10 to promote the adoption of children. Previously, he was … Continue reading

My Day at Cougar Nation

I know, I know — it’s a stretch tying BYU Football to Family Home Evening. But come on, it could work! Bronco Mendenhall, the coach of the BYU Cougars Football team, hosted a day for the football alumni yesterday. What a blast it was to see old friends, legends and new acquaintances. I stood between my husband and 1965’s running back, Mr. Swanson (either Dave or LaVern), as we watched the Cougars scrimmage. Here’s the joke I was told: “What happens to people who say shoot? They go to heck.” Corny, yes. But did it make me laugh, yes. It … Continue reading

BYU Football – Spring Ball

Okay, this is going to be a short one. My last two blogs have been a little bit lengthy. I know BYU football isn’t a category here — but hey, is there anything more intrinsic with the LDS family than BYU sports? Today, my husband and I are going to check out the scrimmage that ends BYU’s Spring Football just before the Blue and White game takes place on Saturday. Why? Because we love BYU football. We’re excited for the year to come and the changes which took place in the coaching staff last year. We have a dear friend … Continue reading
