In Awe

A friend of mine told me about a girl that I knew nothing about the other day, but it really impacted me, and I’ve been thinking about her ever since. I haven’t read her book, or been a long-time reader of her blog like I’m sure many people have, but I am impressed by her selflessness. If the whole world could have her attitude and obvious trust in God in all things, then the world would definitely be a better place. Her blog is here. She is 23 years old. And, she has adopted 13 Ugandan girls. Yes, it blew … Continue reading

Need A Spiritual Boost?

I have spoken before about my experience attending Time Out for Women a few years ago. It is a great way to re-charge spiritually and get that extra boost you need to continue on your way at being a better mom, wife, and daughter of God. I loved the talks, and treasure the notes I took during them. I read them every once in a while to remember the spiritual thoughts I had during those talks. I especially loved hearing Hillary Weeks. One of my favorite LDS artists. But, we can’t always make it to TOFW can we? Well, I … Continue reading

Secret Shoppers for Churches?

I have to say that one thing I love about our church is the fact that members serve in positions in the church for free. No one is paid. While we do come from a very wealthy church, the clergy are not paid, and therefore, the money is being spent on things like buildings, spreading the gospel, and welfare. I heard about a recent program kind of like the secret shopper program. Mystery guests attend churches across the country for the first time and score them on various things in 15 categories like the sermon, pre-and post-service atmosphere, seating, etc. … Continue reading

Book Review: A Woman’s Power

When I heard about the book, “A Woman’s Power: Threads That Bind Us to God” by Fay A. Klingler, I jumped on the chance to read it. My life right now seems chaotic, and disorganized. Having a new baby in the house for the third time has turned my world upside down. I don’t have a lot of spiritual time to myself, and I was grateful for the opportunity to read a book that I was hoping would give me a spiritual boost. And it did. Fay Klingler shares some of her own life experiences as well as experiences of … Continue reading

The Red Tent

“And my Father dwelt in a tent.” 1 Nephi 2:15. I remember back to my seminary days in high school and it always seemed that there was someone who would jokingly recite this saying that it was their favorite scripture. Or, when trying to show that they had one memorized, they would quote this one. But, recently, I read a book that gave this sentence some meaning. It was recommended to me long ago by a friend to read the book, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. She suggested that it was about women in biblical times, but other than … Continue reading

Is Having Children Narcissistic?

For me, I always knew that I would one day have a family. I have been extremely blessed to be the mother to two, almost three children. I sometimes look at them and marvel at the fact that I am the mother of these little beings that walk and talk, and have very different personalities. As a psychology major, I often think about family dynamics. I think about my own family and how I was raised, and I also think about my children and how they are being raised. I am also fascinated by birth order, and how that affects … Continue reading

A Misunderstood Religion

I feel like maybe I’ve written this article before, just with different words, or a slightly different spin on things, but the bottom line is clear to me. I’m a member of a misunderstood religion. I recently read an online article titled, “Mormons Using the Web to Control Their Own Image“. In the age of Mormon Mommy Blogs, and twitter, facebook, and a plethora of other avenues for Mormons’ voices to be heard, why are we still so misunderstood? This article was actually speaking to the church as an organization making every effort to steer the average google user toward … Continue reading

Do YOU Sugardoodle?

I’m sure if you are a Mormon woman in a calling such as Primary, YW, or even Relief Society, then you have probably heard of Sugardoodle.net. If you haven’t, then you are truly missing out! There are many great websites that can be found all over the internet full of great ideas to help you fulfill your calling, but now that I’m in primary, this has become my lifesaver. Whenever it is my week to do sharing time with the kids, I turn to this trusty website and start looking for fabulous ideas to get creative, and think outside the … Continue reading

Pioneer Appreciation

I am not a history buff. In fact, I claim to hate history and want nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, this tends to encompass the history of my own church as well. I am not like many people that I have met that love to learn about church history, but give me a good fiction book to read, and I’m there! Growing up in Texas as a child, I was vaguely reminded of the pioneers and what they did for church history. And, when I say vaguely reminded I mean that I was probably given a lesson about the … Continue reading

A Mormon for President?

Well, now that Mitt Romney has announced his official run for the republican nomination for president, there are going to be a lot of questions about Mormons and about whether or not a Mormon for president is a good idea. Is it? Well, I say, why not. But, that doesn’t mean I’m jumping on the political bandwagon just yet. Many Mormons will vote for Romney for the simple fact that he is an active, practicing Mormon. And, while that does comfort me to a point, it is not all that I will consider when choosing who to vote for. After … Continue reading
