I’m a Mormon!

Have you seen the church’s series on Mormon’s introducing themselves on www.mormon.org? What a great idea! I’ve been seeing these all over Facebook too. Not only is it a great missionary tool, but what I love about it is how it shows the world that Mormons are just like everybody else! Well, we aren’t in our religious beliefs maybe, but in our everyday lives, we have a lot in common with those around us. I love how you can click on different Mormon’s profiles on this site and read about everyday members of the church. But, I especially love how … Continue reading

Significant in Every Way

Last year my husband and I went to South Africa to visit people and places from his mission. It was an incredible experience. I loved meeting the people there and visiting the three wards we attended. The people were so warm and inviting, and many remembered my husband as the red-headed missionary who either taught them the gospel or served in their ward. Although we met many amazing people, one young woman in particular stood out to me. This young lady is smart. As we talked, I was impressed with her depth, her understanding, and her ease of expression for … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Church

I’m not talking about the spiritual preparation that I’d like to be here…I’m talking about getting physically ready and making it to church on time (or at least somewhat close to on time). Before our baby came along, my husband and I were on time most of the time. Sadly, I can’t say that we were always on time as we both love to catch just a few more minutes of church. And with a 9:00 am Sacrament meeting, that can spell trouble. But we did pretty well. Now we have a baby, and I’m amazed at how much more … Continue reading

Parenting at Church

I want to know how some of these parents do it. Not only do they get their multiple children ready for church and appear on time (almost as by magic), they have an amazing way of teaching and disciplining their kids during church. Of course, I’m talking mostly about Sacrament meeting, as Primary is generally easier for kids and they’re not confined to a semi-hard bench for 70 minutes. My small experience with this includes helping Mom with my younger siblings when I was a teenager, watching a dear family in our ward while the parents sang in the ward … Continue reading

For the Strength of Youth Series

Have you read the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet lately? I hadn’t until I was called to a Young Women calling a while ago. All I remembered was that as a youth I used to think of the pamphlet as guidance for what I wasn’t supposed to do. As I looked at it again, I was amazed at the simple doctrines, the understanding, and the love that radiates from the pages of this pamphlet. Everything is so direct and simple. Everything is doctrinally sound. It’s fabulous. Whether you have a teenager around the house or not, this little book … Continue reading

Technology at Church

I have a love-hate relationship with technology at church. There are some amazing things out there, but they can be abused quite easily. Perhaps this love-hate relationship stems from the fact that I work with the youth and I see how often they turn to technology for myriad purposes—both the good and the not-so-reverent. But the youth definitely aren’t the only ones using technology in church. Have you ever looked down the pew and seen an adult playing a game on their phone? What about texting during church. I’ve seen that one a lot too. I have to admit it … Continue reading

Conference Center Turns Ten Years Old

I don’t know if the last decade has gone as quickly for you as it has for me, but can you believe that the Conference Center is ten years old this year? Ten years ago this month, the first General Conference was held in this historic building, giving a break to the much smaller (but still impressive) Tabernacle. The Conference Center has become part of Salt Lake City and definitely part of Temple Square. After a decade of use, it’s still as beautiful, inspiring, and useful as the day it was completed. One of my favorite features of the Conference … Continue reading

Who I Am—An Introduction

Who is Lisa Mabey? On the surface, I’m a new blogger for the LDS Families and Photography blogs. I’m a soon-to-be LDS mom and wife. I’m a young women first counselor. But a little deeper, I’m an intently religious woman who values her convictions and testimony above anything else in life. I grew up in a tiny town in Idaho where I was surrounded by people who shared my faith and taught me through their examples. I grew up in a home that many people have envied for the love and truths taught there. I moved to Utah to attend … Continue reading

Visible and Invisible Trials

One of the sisters in our ward had a baby recently. She lives in a lovely house, has a handsome husband, and she herself looks like a model. She put on very little weight during the pregnancy and now, although the baby is only weeks old, she is thin and gorgeous. At church on Sunday, we all gathered around to admire the baby. Several women commented on how good the new mother looked, and one of the Primary teachers even went so far as to say, “I don’t like you.” Truly, it would seem that this new mommy has it … Continue reading

Abortion: An Assault on the Defenseless

I was deeply touched by the article in this month’s Ensign written by Elder Russell M. Nelson entitled, “Abortion: An Assault on the Defenseless.” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always stood against abortion, and in this article, Elder Nelson reiterates the Church’s policy and reminds us of the sanctity of life. He begins by mentioning the statistics of the men and women who were killed in action in World War I and II. Together, those wars saw over thirty million soldiers felled in defense of our country. That is a lot of death. And yet, today’s … Continue reading
