Much Needed Inspiration

This past Sunday in Primary, I became really frustrated. It seems that the past two weeks, the kids have been so irreverent. Obviously, this is something that every primary president probably has to deal with, but I was feeling so frustrated by it after primary that I spent a long time speaking to my counselors about what we can do to increase the reverence in primary. Luckily, we have General Conference this next weekend that will definitely yield some inspiration and guidance, and hopefully give the spiritual energy to tackle such a problem! The kids just seemed to be wiggly, … Continue reading

Teaching with Simplicity

This past Sunday was my turn to do sharing time. It had been 2 weeks since I had been to church, and I was looking forward to it. I had a cool game planned, and knew the kids would have so much fun. However, the subject was the word of wisdom, and I felt strongly that they needed to hear the doctrine of the word of wisdom before playing the game so that they understood. We had older kids pair up with younger ones and did the simplest lesson. We pulled out our scriptures and read and talked together from … Continue reading

Primary Music

In my primary right now we are going through a bit of a transitional period as we have a new primary chorister, and are trying to work out the kinks. So, I’ve been reading a lot in the church handbook about the purpose of singing time, and the purpose of the primary songs. Something stood out to me as I was reading today that got me thinking. I loved singing in primary as a child. I still do, actually. Some of those songs I sang as a child are still with me despite my horrible memory. Even to this day, … Continue reading

Every Sunday

Do you ever wonder how much your child is actually learning in Primary? Do you wonder if they are “getting it”? More importantly, do you worry about whether or not you are teaching them enough about the Gospel when you have those opportunities come up, or even when you don’t? I do. But, I am continually surprised by how much my daughter is learning, in fact. She is 5 and in the CTR class at church. She is not a morning person. We have the reverse block, which puts primary first at 9 am. I look over at her and … Continue reading

Primary Love

We have a really small primary, and as the President, I thought I was doing a great job at getting to know the kids individually. After all, when there are only about 15 that are active, it isn’t too hard to remember names, and what they are up to. But, I realized a week or so ago that you can never do too much to show a child love. We had an annual bike parade and breakfast for our ward for the 24th of July celebrations. There is this family in our ward that has 6 kids, and is being … Continue reading

Pioneer Day Celebrations

As I mentioned before, Pioneer day is a big day here in Utah. It is a state holiday. Yesterday was the observance of Pioneer day since it fell on a Sunday. I actually spent a lot of time this past weekend thinking about the pioneers and being grateful for their trek into Utah. We started off the celebration on the actual day, in Primary. The children got up and sang two songs in Sacrament meeting. And, the talks were about some of our ward members’ ancestors that were pioneers. I couldn’t help but be grateful for these men and women … Continue reading

A Friend in your Home

I have written before about the Friend magazine online, and all the great tools that it has, but do you subscribe to the actual magazine? If you have young kids in your home, or young kids that visit your home often, I hope that you do! This magazine is a little jewel that I’ve come to truly appreciate as I am serving as the Primary President. I have frequently used this magazine lately for kids in primary that are unprepared for their talk during opening exercises. This happens a lot. Fortunately though, the Friend goes right along with the theme … Continue reading

Follow the Inspiration

When you receive a new calling in the church, it is amazing to me the responsibility and inspiration that comes with it. I have been the young women president in the past and remember always thinking about those girls that I was responsible for. I may not have been praying formally to help them all the time, but they were always on my mind. At the most random moments, I would have a feeling of how I could help them, or what kind of lesson needed to be taught. It is amazing that when you are set apart when you … Continue reading

Feeling the Spirit in Any Calling

Some people may say that if you are called to a certain calling like Nursery, or Primary, that you may not get that much out of your Sundays. You are too busy teaching others to get anything out of it yourself. I think that is not true though. It is all about what we put into it, and what we want to take away that depends on how much we feel the Spirit. This past week in Primary, I felt the spirit very strongly. I did not have to do the sharing time. It was one of my counselor’s turns. … Continue reading

Primary Leadership Training

I had the opportunity to attend a Primary Leadership meeting this past week on Temple Square. It was led and conducted by the Primary General Presidency. I have to say that I’m so glad that I went, because it not only gave me some great ideas, but it calmed my heart a little bit about this new calling. First, the music was powerful. And, you know what we sang? Primary music! I realized the power behind those songs that the children sing, and I realized how easily we can feel the spirit with the primary music. I can’t wait to … Continue reading
