Reaching the One

Since I am a part of the new Relief Society presidency in our newly combined ward, we have been going on visits to get to know some of the other members that we don’t know already. Since we had portions of 3 wards combined into one, it is a daunting task to get to know everyone. However, I have found that when you visit someone in their home, you truly get a better sense of who they are, and how you can help them. I think this is why the idea of Visiting Teaching is so important. I’m realizing this … Continue reading

Last Minute Visiting Teaching Ideas

When I go visiting teaching, I like to stick to the lesson for the most part. After all, they are the lessons that are inspired that we are supposed to share with the sisters we visit teach. However, sometimes, the lesson doesn’t seem to apply very well to the sister we are visiting, or sometimes, I have a hard time relating. Whatever the case, sometimes, it is nice to do something a little extra or different for your sisters to build relationships with them, or make them feel the love of the Savior. We are supposed to be working in … Continue reading

Do You Open Up To Your Visiting Teachers?

I went visiting teaching last night. As usual, I always feel so much better about life when I get to go visiting teaching. This month, the topic of the visiting teaching message was visiting teaching. I thought that was interesting. Yet, I have gained a testimony over the years that visiting teaching is truly important to helping us become more like Christ. The message was very similar to the article I spoke of from the March Ensign. It spoke of being the hands of the Savior and what we can do to really minister to the sisters we visit. However, … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Guidelines

Did you know that the visiting teaching guidelines changed a bit with the new leadership handbook that was written not too long ago? My Mom was recently visiting me, and she told me about some changes that had been made. I didn’t really know what she was talking about, but then she pulled out my March Ensign and showed me this article. The biggest change? Ministering. It used to be that we were caught up with numbers. We had to report numbers to the Relief Society president or visiting teaching coordinator and let them know how many of our sisters … Continue reading

When There Aren’t Enough Hands to Do His Work

I came home from ward council last night feeling a little depressed. I think the feeling was mutual among everyone there. It was probably because our Bishop seemed sad and frustrated about our efforts in the ward with home teaching, visiting teaching, and trying to reach out to others. There frankly are way too many less active people in our ward and not enough active people to visit them all. This leaves a great burden on those that are active to try to reach out. But, what was worrying our bishop was that those active people were also feeling left … Continue reading

Be A Friend

Visiting Teaching is not an easy assignment. Sometimes we get paired with a partner that we don’t quite mesh with, and other times, we are assigned to visit women in the ward that we have absolutely nothing in common with. This can be frustrating. We are told over and over to be a friend to these women and to not think of it as an assignment, but I have to admit that sometimes I have a hard time doing that. Maybe it’s because I don’t always listen to the spirit, or maybe it’s because of my own inhibitions, who knows? … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Message-General Conference

For the month of November, we are asked to pick a general conference talk as our message to share with the sisters that we visit teach. I tend to try and think of things I need to hear again, study, or revisit when making a decision of which talk to share. The talk, “The Privilege of Prayer” by J. Devn Cornish came into my mind this time. His talk started out with a story about how his prayers were answered with a quarter he found on the sidewalk when he was in desperate need of a piece of fried chicken … Continue reading

October Visiting Teaching

Tonight I’m going to visit some of the women in my ward for visiting teaching, and decided to sit down and read the message for this month, titled, If we do not doubt. Sister Beck speaks of the importance for the women of the church to keep our covenants, and not doubt, and then in turn, the promise is made to us that those around us will not doubt either. I love this paragraph in particular, “When we honor our covenants, Heavenly Father can prepare the way for us. We are to live our covenants with precision. We can, for … Continue reading

Strengthening Families by Increasing Spirituality

Do you ever look at a family and just think, “Wow, they have it together!” Do you ever ask yourself, why did all of their kids go on missions, and get married in the temple, or why do they seem so close? I ask myself questions like these all the time. Sometimes, no matter what the parents might do, children will still go astray, however, we have been counseled over and over to strengthen our home and families and we have received promises from our leaders that if we do that, we will be blessed. The visiting teaching message this … Continue reading

August Visiting Teaching

The visiting teaching message for August is titled, A Society of Holy Women. Do we think of ourselves as holy? I don’t know if I could say that I truly do think of myself as holy. I know that I strive to do what is right, keep my covenants, and attend my church meetings. I try to dress appropriately, and teach my children right from wrong. Does that make me holy? When I think of a holy person, I think of someone that just radiates purity. I think of someone like our prophet, a strong and faithful missionary, or a … Continue reading
