The Side of the Mistress

Earlier this week I watched a frustrating segment on “The View.” The ladies were interviewing Rielle Hunter, mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards. Rielle is known for stealing the charming Mr. Edwards from his wife, Elizabeth, during the time she was battling cancer. She ended up getting pregnant and the whole controversy ended his political career. So now, as always happens, she has come out with a new book in which she tells “her side.” I love it…the side of the mistress, as if we really need some type of justification. While I have no intention on reading the … Continue reading

Less People Are Getting Married

Have you heard that marriage is on the decline? Not in the sense that they are ending in divorce (although, that is obviously still an issue) but that less people in America are embracing holy matrimony? Back in 1960, the percentage of adults married was at 72%. Currently it’s at 51% and according to new research, with the trend continuing this way, in just a few years it will fall below 50%. While marriage is declining, single person/parent homes and living together is increasing. We all have our own thoughts and opinions on this. My personal view is that marriage … Continue reading

Is Alzheimer’s a Reason to Get Divorced?

To the shock of many (myself included), last week televangelist Pat Robertson (of “The 700 Club”) made a shocking statement. He was asked about a man who started seeing another woman after his wife had developed Alzheimer’s. Robertson’s response was that it’s okay to get divorced and start all over again. There are two reasons this doesn’t sit well with many people. The first is that Pat Robertson is a Christian, so you would assume that he believes in and follows the scriptures, which clearly indicate that God hates divorce. The second is that out the window go the vows … Continue reading

Why I Wouldn’t Want to Marry a Prince

I am officially over it and it hasn’t even taken place yet. Of course I’m talking about the royal wedding, which I am doing my level best to ignore. But it is not easy. TV stations here are obsessed with it. I have no doubt the magazine market is too but since I don’t buy magazines and haven’t been near a supermarket or shop in over ten days, I wouldn’t know. It seems to me though that marrying a prince would be awful. Why? I’ll tell you. Firstly you’d live your whole life in the public eye with everyone watching … Continue reading

Banning Interracial Marriages?

Have you read or heard about the disturbing poll that took place in Mississippi? Apparently 46% of Mississippi Republicans would support banning interracial marriages. I was absolutely shocked by this. There were also only 40% who believe it should be legal. Should this surprise me? Maybe it shouldn’t but it does. First of all, I guess I thought we had come much further than this. I’m not so naïve to believe that racism has been completely eradicated but I did think we were further along than this. Second of all, we live in such a mixed society. America is made … Continue reading

Beauty and Marriage

Knowing I was a big fan of Elizabeth Taylor Mick mentioned early this morning that she had died. The world has lost a great actress. Her career spanned seven decades and who could forget her as a beguiling young beauty in National Velvet or her great roles as Virginia Woolf? She was also extremely beautiful but it seems that her beauty did not bring her great happiness. As well as being remembered for her acting, and winning two academy awards, she is synonymous in some people’s minds with marriage and divorce. Eight marriages included her marriage to and divorce from … Continue reading

Taking Each Other for Granted

‘Everything’s getting quicker these days, even infidelity,’ Mick said when I told him about a recent article which had discovered it was no longer a seven year itch but a three year glitch. However infidelity isn’t the reason for these couples splitting up. Rather than infidelity, a recent survey has found it is about that three year period where couples start to take each other for granted. And what are the things that are causing them to get disenchanted with their partner? Such things as ‘weight gain, stinginess, and toe-nail clippings on the bathroom floor and snoring’ are among the … Continue reading

Disasters and Marriage

Disasters affect relationships in one of two ways. They can bring a couple closer together as they cling to each other for support and comfort and love. Or they can produce so much anger that people turn against each other and take out their frustrations on those closest to them. This is eyes exactly what is happening in Christchurch. Reports show ‘domestic violence has surged by 50 percent after a major tremor rocked New Zealand’s second city last September.’ That tremor was ‘the prelude to Tuesday’s quake that left at least 123 dead and destroyed parts of the city centre.’ … Continue reading

Celebrating National Marriage Week

Did you know that it’s National Marriage Week? It goes from February 7th through the 14th, Valentine’s Day. I love the fact that we have an entire week to recognize and celebrate something so very important. So what is the point to National Marriage Week? It is to build a stronger marriage culture since it has been found that healthy marriages can reduce the risk of poverty and benefit children in a number of ways. It is also a way to encourage married people to do what they can to strengthen their marriages and thereby, reducing the rate of divorce. … Continue reading

Finding The Perfect Mate

A little while back a 27 year old man from Tokyo married a Nintendo character. That’s right. This man said ‘I do’ to a video game creation. The character is called Nene Anegasaki, and is the star of a dating simulation game called Love Plus. Now I know what a sad state our society is in. According to the man, Nene is ‘better than a human girlfriend.’ He says she is ‘the perfect woman.’ And right there is the problem. He’s looking for the perfect woman. Well good luck with that. Little wonder a human being isn’t good enough for … Continue reading
