When in Rome …

Do you think that divorce, prenuptial agreements and living together are just a modern invention? Turns out that all of these existed in Ancient Rome and oh, and politically advantageous marriages? Yep, they happened there too. As it turns out, if you wanted to seek an office in the Roman political structure, you were best off arranging marriages for your children to increase your political alliances. The name for marriage was matrimonium (the root of matrimonial) and the root of that word is mater – or mother. Providing children was the principle requirement behind a couple entering into matrimonium. Marriages … Continue reading

Being Married to a Manager

Photo by Rachel Crews Wayne’s used to managing people at work. Sometimes he forgets to leave that side of himself behind when he comes home, though. As I wrote about in When My Husband’s Stressed, I’m in charge of things around the house. (Okay, maybe not everything, but quite a few.) That’s why I take great offense when he tries to manage me. Take our impending move for instance. He’s very methodical. He wants a list and an update every morning of what’s on my agenda and where we stand with getting things done to get the house on the … Continue reading

Seriously…?!? What a Spring!

Just two days ago I was talking about May Day and celebrating the changing seasons and last night another spring storm came raging through like a stampeding herd of buffalo. Last February, just before I had my surgery, a severe windstorm damaged a section of our fence along one side of the house and weakened the rest of it. About a week ago, that new fence was completed. Violent Storm During … Continue reading

Tales of Marriage: Anecdotes

He continued to answer, more of a grunt, “In a minute.” Finally, his wife called from the other room, “Are you sleeping?” Apparently, he was half-asleep since his response was, “With who?” Needless to say, the response did not go over well with his wife and he was soon up out of bed and trying to make amends. Short Sheeted A young couple married and moved into their new home. The wife … Continue reading

Oops, I Did it Again…

No, I’m not singing a Britney Spears song, I’m doing some self-evaluation. It seems that I’ve done it to my husband yet again. Some may remember me discussing his career move and yesterday, I had to take him to the orientation. It’s nearly a week long, and several hours away, so I took him to get settled into his hotel room. I packed meticulously, making sure he’d have everything he needed, fussing all day until it was time to leave. I think I saw him rolling his eyes as we began packing things into the car. I should have taken … Continue reading
