Don’t Take Your Snake for a Stroll – Karin Ireland

“Don’t Take Your Snake for a Stroll” is a cautionary tale about the proper care and keeping of pets, and the activities that are the most appropriate for them. For instance, it’s highly recommended that you not take your pig to the mall. He’ll just play in the planters. Elephants, when taken to the beach, require so much suntan lotion, it’s hardly worth your time. Don’t take your snake out walking where others can see it. You’ll have little old ladies climbing light posts to get out of your way, which is embarrassing and more than a little bit uncomfortable … Continue reading

The Dream Shop – Katharine Kenah

It’s too hot to sleep, and Pip wishes she could be somewhere cool. Her cousin Joseph once told her that if she closed her eyes and thought about wooden horses prancing backwards, she would find her way to a magical shop where you could buy dreams. She decides to give it a try, never imagining what would happen next. She finds herself in a wonderful store filled with magical things. Anything she put in her cart, she would dream about. She picks out a baby pig and is making her next selection when she sees Joseph in the store too. … Continue reading

Mr. Gumpy’s Outing – John Burningham

Mr. Gumpy’s Outing by John Burningham is a classic children’s picture book. My own children laughed with every reading. The book won the 1971 ALA Notable Children’s Book award, the 1972 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the New York Times Best Illustrated Book of 1971, and the 1970 Kate Greenaway Medal. Mr. Gumpy is an English gentleman. He owns a boat, and his house is by a river. One day he goes out in his boat. A boy and girl ask if they can come for a ride. Mr. Gumpy says they can, as long as they don’t squabble. A rabbit … Continue reading

Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook

When I first spotted the Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook with recipes inspired by Dr. Suess I wondered what on earth it could have for recipes besides of course, green eggs and ham. Being a mother of three, I’m fairly well versed in Suess books. I thought about the Scrambled Eggs Super-Dee-Dooper and frankfurter roasts that the Sneeches with star-bellies host. But I couldn’t think of much else. I am amazed at how many food items Suess included in his books. The cookbook includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages, and even desserts. The recipes are accented with quotes … Continue reading

Baby Einstein The ABCs of Art – Julie Aigner-Clark

My own children were too old by the time the Baby Einstein products came on the market. I’ve never actually seen one of their videos. Today at the library, the Baby Einstein ABCs of Art caught my eye. The cover shows a blue goat with a pallet, and Pablo Picasso’s picture Young Boy with Dog. I found out that the art loving goat is named Van Goat. Inside the book, each double page spread shows a letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case. On the other side of the page are paintings. One page reads “H is for … Continue reading

Dylan the Eagle-Hearted Chicken – David L. Harrison

With a title like that, how could I resist? Ethel the chicken is a proud mama. There’s something special about this one particular egg—she’s already named the chick Dylan, even though he’s not hatched yet. She hides the egg in a safe place so nothing will happen to him. Already she’s dreaming of who he’ll be. But he’s taking forever to hatch. Stiff and sore, Ethel gets up to stretch, and Cawly the crow swoops down and swipes the egg, right off the nest. Ethel tries to fly after him, but only manages to get ten feet off the ground. … Continue reading

When Cows Come Home – David L. Harrison

You all know what a sucker I am for cute illustrations. While at the library looking for great picture books, I happened upon this one and snatched it up. Right across the front cover is a line of dancing cows. Can it get any better than this? The sun is starting to set and the cows are coming home. They aren’t just walking, however – they’re commuting with style, their hips and tails swaying, their heads held high—they’re like models on a runway. It’s quite inspirational. They contentedly chew their cud as they enter the barn, but if the farmer … Continue reading

Lizzy’s Do’s and Don’ts – Jessica Harper

The writing/illustration team of Jessica Harper and her sister Lindsay Harper duPont brings us “Lizzy’s Do’s and Don’ts,” a cute story about a girl named Lizzie who is a little frustrated. She feels like all her mother ever says is “Don’t.” Don’t do this, don’t do that, don’t do this other thing, and above all else, don’t argue. It’s hard to keep track of all those don’ts. She’s not allowed to stack all the kitchen chairs on top of each other so she can reach the top shelf. She’s not supposed to bring home containers of sand from the beach. … Continue reading

Nora’s Room – Jessica Harper

Nora’s room is a frightening place. It has “keep out” signs plastered all over the door, and the strangest noises keep coming from inside it, making Nora’s mother say, “Something is going on in Nora’s room.” Even though she’s busy in the kitchen and watching the twins, she decides she’d better go investigate, even though something tells her she’s not going to like what she sees. Maybe every animal in the county zoo is on the loose and found their way to Nora’s room. It certainly sounds like it. It could be a bear dancing with a moose, or some … Continue reading

Tops & Bottoms – Janet Stevens

Tops & Bottoms is a charming and unique picture book written and illustrated by Janet Stevens. You will need to turn the book sideways to view the illustrations. As a bonus, it’s a great introduction into how vegetables grow and a vote for working hard. The book draws on the traditions of trickster and Brer Rabbit tales as well as European folk tales. In the story, we meet a lazy land-owning bear. He’s so lazy that he sleeps through growing seasons. We also meet the rabbit family who are not doing well. The rabbit father, Hare, lost a bet with … Continue reading
