Children’s Television: Cyberchase

Cyberchase takes place inside the cartoon world of Cyberspace, a place where cooperation and good math skills combine to save the day. Imagine sitting around your room when you are suddenly drawn through a portal into another world, one where everything and everyone seems to be made up of computers, geometric shapes or numbers. You, along with your two friends, have been asked to save Cyberspace by protecting Motherboard from the misguided Hacker (voiced by the classic Christopher Lloyd), a classic villain who is known for his chin, his reference to himself as “Thee Hacke,r” and his schemes for taking … Continue reading

On Demand Shows Your Kids Should Be Watching

While we do try to limit television in our house (my daughter is going on a week of absolutely no electronic media whatsoever for refusing to clean her room). Having said that, I think that there are some shows that are our go-to shows, when the kids do watch television. They are each about 20-30 minutes long, and have some educational value. When all of the homework is done, and the kids need to wind down a bit, I click over to the on demand feature and select one of the following shows. I Spy Ages 3-4 A weird little … Continue reading

Blue’s Clues

It used to be that Sesame Street was the most beloved children’s television show of all time. It’s certainly still up there in the ratings, but of all the shows that have come around more recently, Blue’s Clues is giving the old classic a run for its money in the popularity department. The premise is simple. A young man named Steve lives in a house with his puppy, Blue, and several talking objects such as a drawer, a clock, a shovel and pail, and a salt and pepper shaker set. Each day, there’s something Blue would like to do or … Continue reading

Max and Ruby

The Nick Jr. children’s television show “Max and Ruby” is based on the bestselling books by Rosemary Wells about a little three-year-old bunny boy named Max and his older sister, seven-year-old Ruby. Ruby is very down to earth, pragmatic, and responsible. Max is free spirited, a little bit of a handful, and smart as a whip. Together they make quite the combination. Each episode of the show follows a formula. Ruby wants to accomplish something for the greater good, and Max keeps interrupting her, ruining her plans, and generally making a mess of things. He doesn’t say much, usually just … Continue reading

Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman

“Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman” is one of my children’s favorite shows, and it’s one I certainly don’t mind letting them watch. It’s a game show and a reality show wrapped up in one, but it’s educational, too, and I really like that. Fetch is an animated dog who talks (just what every game show host wishes they could be) and he’s a little sassy. He interacts with real children in his studio and asks them various questions based on stunts or experiments he assigns them. They earn points based on the things they have learned, their ability to complete the … Continue reading

Yo Gabba Gabba!

Has a children’s television show ever annoyed you so badly that you wanted to burst into tears? Is that same television show one that your toddler loves? And, is your love for your toddler the only thing keeping you from leaping at the screen, clawing at it with your fingernails, screaming? This is how I feel about “Yo Gabba Gabba!” a somewhat new children’s television show on Nick Jr. If I didn’t love my three-year-old so much, the show would be banned at my house. The host is a hyper young man wearing a huge orange wig who goes by … Continue reading

Super Why – PBS show for preschoolers

Super Why is a new show for preschoolers on PBS that encourages early reading skills. The show is also available to view online or download as a podcast. One of the Super Why show goals is to make reading adventurous and fun. Super Why does that, and more. The characters go on reading adventures, discover the alphabet, practice the magic of spelling, and use the “power to read” to change the story. Each show starts with a social or manners problem preschoolers can relate to, like being considerate, asking before taking something, or how to be a good friend. The … Continue reading

Hannah Montana – Teen TV Review

Hannah Montana is a half hour comedy show on the Disney Channel. The star of the show is Miley Cyrus as Hannah. Miley/Hannah is also a real life star. She currently has two cd’s on the top 40 list. Her father on the show is her real life father, and country music star, Billy Ray Cyrus. One of the things I like the most about this show is that the father actually has some sense, and he’s involved in the lives of his children. He’s got some great southern sayings that make us all laugh. The premise of the show … Continue reading

Life With Derek – Teen TV Show Review

Life with Derek is a half hour sit-com on the Disney Channel. The series is about a blended family, but it’s not The Brady Brunch. The main character is Casey, a fifteen year old girl whose mother remarries. Casey, her little sister, and her mother move into the new husband George’s house and find themselves sharing the space with two brothers and an additional little sister. The oldest brother is Derek. He’s also fifteen. Both Casey and Derek are used to ruling the house and they clash. In one early show the kids bug each others rooms to spy on … Continue reading

Wombat Goes Walkabout – Michael Morpurgo

This richly illustrated picture book called my name as soon as I saw it on the shelf. It must have had something to do with the extremely cute wombat face on the cover. Wombat loves to dig really deep holes, climb inside, and think. On this particular day, he did just that, and started having thoughts. He wondered – why is the sky blue? Why wasn’t he a kangaroo? When he was done with his pondering, he came out of his hole to discover that his mother was nowhere to be seen. He introduced himself to a kookaburra, and then … Continue reading
