US and Canadian Troops Working Together

I read an interesting article today at canoe.ca stating that Canada has taken to putting up ads in subway stations around Washington, D.C. The point of this ad campaign is to let Americans in the capitol know that Canadians are also fighting the war on terror. I have to admit at first glance I thought this was a bizarre move on Canada’s part but upon further consideration it actually makes sense. Relations between Canada and the U.S. have been strained since President Bush decided to send troops into Iraq while then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien opted out. Each country had … Continue reading

Give Me Back My Big Toilet!

Dear Mr. President: Okay, I know President Clinton meant to conserve an important resource when he took away our big toilets, but there is one huge problem Mr. President. I have to flush the thing three times to get all the junk down the pipe. Before he left office, President Clinton signed many bills into law that would not affect his popularity. One of those laws requires that all toilets placed in new buildings and homes use no more than three gallons of water. (I actually think mine holds less than that.) This law was implemented to save water. It … Continue reading

Important Tricare Information for Reservists

If you or your soldier just returned from active duty, you have an important deadline that you do not want to miss. The Federal government authorized a 90-day extension on Tricare for reservists returning from duty without any premium charges. In addition, reservists are eligible for one year of coverage for every three months served on active duty. If you served 18 months, you would be eligible for six years of coverage. There is a price involved, but the benefits may be worth it for you and your family. As soldiers demobilize, they will complete necessary forms to select the … Continue reading

The Military Move

When normal people move, they just buy a house, sell their old one, pack up and go. Of course normal people don’t usually pack up and move to a place several thousand miles away that they’ve never been to before. The military citizen has a little more to do when they move. Here it is, day by day: Day 1. Go to every local agency you’ve ever done business with and get copies of those records (doctors, hospitals, insurance agents, financial planners, etc.) Day 2. Close or transfer every local account you have (cable, satellite, internet, telephone, gym, subscriptions, banks, … Continue reading

Going to College When You Are In the Army

Continuing with my theme of Military.com, I will start down the left side with the first button called “Education.” This is not the training provided by the military, but rather college education. Getting a college education is difficult for soldiers. Because you move around the world every few years or leave for a deployment, finishing college can be difficult at best. For some, they feel it is impossible and give up. Military.com has the Education link to help you search for schools that will help you finish your degree, or just get some training. One thing you may face as … Continue reading

Being a Military Wife

I’m sitting here in what is left of my kitchen. There are four strangers walking though my house and going through everything I own. All that I have is in their hands now and all I can do is give them an envelope of cash and hope that I see my things again someday. I am a military wife. “Active Duty Dependent Spouse” is my official title. I’m hardly dependent though. My husband and I have been married for seven years now and he’s been dependent upon me all this time to manage, furnish and decorate his home, shop for … Continue reading
