Topper (1937)

Starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett as the Kirbys, a fun-loving young married couple who gets killed in a car accident, “Topper,” the classic black and white film, has a very cute premise. Unable to find a way to get to Heaven, our ghosts decide they must be lacking in good deeds, and no one needs a good deed done to them more than their stuffy friend Topper, president of the bank. Topper’s life is ordered and precise, his every movement dictated by his wife, and he hardly ever has any fun. The Kirbys are just the ticket to open … Continue reading

Grease (1978)

“Grease,” first a Broadway hit and then a movie in 1978 starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, has recently been resurrected and is enjoying even more popularity than before. DVDs of the film are being sold wearing little leather jackets, a great marketing ploy, for sure. Danny Zucko (Travolta) and Sandy Olssen (Newton-John) met over the summer at the beach, and fell in love. When they separated, Sandy believed she was moving back to her home in Australia and would never see Danny again. But then her family’s plans change, and she enrolls in high school in the states. As … Continue reading

Carousel (1956)

Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae formed the perfect couple in the movie “Oklahoma!,” and the studio decided to pair them together again in “Carousel.” However, the two movies couldn’t be more dissimilar. In “Carousel,” MacRae plays Billy Bigelow, a barker at a carousel. He has lived a hard life and picked up some habits he shouldn’t have. Julie Jordan is a young girl in the town who has caught his eye, and she’s interested in him, too. It’s not long before they fall in love, and soon they are married, although her family isn’t so sure it’s a good idea. … Continue reading

An Easter Carol (2004)

I don’t know what’s up with the Nezzar family, but they seem to be absolutely obsessed with owning factories. First we had the Nezzar chocolate factory, then the Nezzar toy factory, and now, in “An Easter Carol,” we have the Nezzar Easter egg factory. Maybe the Nezzars hope that if they keep trying, they’ll finally get it right. “An Easter Carol” is the sequel to “The Star of Christmas.” Again we have the characters Millward and Cavis, this time working for Mr. Nezzar in his Easter egg factory in the hopes of paying him back for the theater they burned … Continue reading

The Barbie Diaries (2006)

After watching and mostly enjoying the recent rash of Barbie movies based on different legends and fairy tales, I was curious to see “The Barbie Diaries.” I’m sorry to say that I was disappointed. To begin with, the animation was odd. Barbie looked nothing like the Barbie we’ve come to expect in the other films, and all the characters looked too real, as though we were trying to break through that Barbie mentality and see them as being real people. But that didn’t work either, because the details were missing. It was more realistic, and yet it wasn’t. The storyline … Continue reading

Just for You (1952)

Bing Crosby stars in this movie about a dysfunctional family who refuses to admit it’s dysfunctional. His character, Jordan Blake, lost his wife ten years previously and has been trying to raise his son Jerry and his daughter Barbara (played by a very young Natalie Wood) with the help of boarding schools and governesses. He himself is a big producer with eleven hit shows to his credit, and feels that all the time he has spent away from home has been worth it, for the life he’s provided for his children. What he fails to see is that they don’t … Continue reading

Don’t Waste Your Time!

It’s hard to find good quality movies to watch, either with your family or by yourself, movies that will leave you either entertained or educated without leaving you feeling like you need a hot bath afterward to scrub off the filth. From time to time, we’ll be posting brief reviews of movies we’ve encountered that didn’t sit well with us, as well as why they didn’t, so you can be forewarned and have more information in your own decision whether you would or would not like to see the show. My five “Don’t Waste Your Time” movies today are, in … Continue reading
