With Six You Get Eggroll (1968)

Doris Day stars in “With Six You Get Eggroll,” a light-hearted look into what happens when two families try to merge into one. Day is Abby McClure, a youngish widow who is raising three sons with just the help of her housekeeper. In need of a date for a business dinner, she checks out her address book for any likely candidates, coming upon the name of Jake Iverson, an old friend of her husband’s. She’s heard that Jake’s wife died some time before and decides that he’s not a terrible solution to her problem, so she calls him up and … Continue reading

Muppets from Space (1999)

I think it’s a pretty safe statement that no one knows what Gonzo is. We know he’s a weirdo, and that he’s blue, and that he’s a Muppet, and that he’s a chicken lover. No, he doesn’t like to eat them – he really loves them, Camilla most particularly. But what is he, exactly? What is his species? This is the question posed by the movie “Muppets from Space.” Kermit is, as usual, trying hard to keep everyone together as they each pursue their dreams. They have purchased a big fixer-upper of a house with room for everyone, but the … Continue reading

The Country Bears (2002)

I’m delighted to say that my long search for a good children’s movie (after a long drought) has come to an end. I watched “The Country Bears” with my kids this afternoon, and we all loved it. Beary Barrington (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) has always felt a little out of place in his family. Could it be because they’re all humans and he’s a bear? His parents try to tell him he’s not adopted, but he knows something just doesn’t feel right. His brother Dex finally tells him that he was found abandoned in the woods and that the … Continue reading

Dr. Doolittle (1967)

“Dr. Doolittle” is based on a character by Hugh Lofting and carried over several volumes. The movie loosely embraces the basic elements of the story, with a whole lot of Hollywood thrown in for good measure. It also includes elements from books farther along in the series and is not limited to just the first volume. The movie stars Rex Harrison as the good doctor, the owner of a parrot named Polynesia. This amazing parrot understands the languages of many different types of animals, and has taught them to Dr. Dolittle. This helps him immensely in his practice as a … Continue reading

The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)

In “The Muppets Take Manhattan,” Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the rest of the gang have just graduated from college. Kermit has written, produced and starred in a musical for the closing finale for the school year, and his fellow graduates think he should take it and the entire cast to Broadway. He’s not so sure, but the others talk him into it, and before he knows it, he’s on his way to New York City. Getting on with an agent is harder than they thought it would be, and it’s not long before they’re sleeping in lockers at the … Continue reading

Inspector Gadget 2 (2003)

When I saw that “Inspector Gadget” the movie had a sequel, with a different star, no less, I hoped it would be better than the first attempt at turning this cartoon into a live-action movie. It was different. It was less violent. Was it better? Well, it was sillier. I think that trying to compare the two would be difficult. French Stewart of “Third Rock from the Sun” fame took over the role of the Inspector from Matthew Broderick. And then things get a little fuzzy – we’re told that Dr. Claw wants revenge on Gadget for sending him to … Continue reading

Just Around the Corner (1938)

Shirley Temple plays a bright, precocious, optimistic little girl with just one parent in “Just Around the Corner.” I do realize I’ve just described every Shirley Temple ever made, but hey, when you’ve got a winning formula, why change it? This time around, the storyline is set during the Depression. Penny’s (Temple) father, Jeff Hale, was an architect, but when stocks fell, he lost his job. He now works as the handyman at the posh apartment building where he used to rent the penthouse suite. Penny has had to come home from her ritzy girls’ school, and she “takes care” … Continue reading

The Happiest Millionaire (1967)

Starring Disney movie staple Fred MacMurray, “The Happiest Millionaire” is the movie in which Lesley Ann Warren made her big screen debut. Playing Cordie Drexel-Biddle, the oldest child and only daughter of an eccentric millionaire, she brings to life the real Cordie, who wrote a book about her childhood memories upon which this movie is based. Mr. Biddle (MacMurray) is an unusual man to say the least. He teaches a Bible school/boxing class in a converted stable in the back yard, and a whole room of his house is dedicated to his pet alligators. Mrs. Biddle (Greer Garson) is a … Continue reading

Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005)

We all remember Herbie from the classic Disney movies about the lovable Volkswagon with a mind of his own. Now Herbie returns in this film starring Lindsay Lohan as Maggie, a college graduate ready to head out into the world. Her father (Michael Keaton) has been racing cars for years, and while Maggie was in high school, she liked to road race. But one wrong turn landed her in the hospital for two weeks, and since that time, she hasn’t been allowed to race. Upon her graduation, Maggie’s father gives her a gift –her choice of whatever car she wants … Continue reading

The Gnome Mobile (1967)

In this classic Disney film, the children from “Mary Poppins” star as brother and sister again, Rodney and Elizabeth, the grandchildren of lumber mogul D.J. Mulrooney. When D.J. goes to the airport to pick up the children for a visit, he takes them home by way of the Redwood Forest. After driving for a while, they stop for lunch, and Elizabeth goes wandering through the trees. To her surprise, she meets Jasper, a real, live gnome, who tells her of a terrible problem. He and his grandfather, Knobby, are the only gnomes left in that portion of the forest, and … Continue reading
