Movies Review – May 6th-May 17th

Combining the last two weeks, here’s what we’ve been up to in Movie Reviews! First off, we took a closer look at the classic movie, “How Green was My Valley.” Roddy McDowall had his first large role in this film about a boy who grew up in a Welsh mining town and experienced both hardship and joy. “The Ultimate Gift” is the story of a spoiled young man who goes on a journey of self-discovery to earn his inheritance, only to find that the lessons he learned were more valuable than any amount of money could have been. “Enchanted” is … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – April 28th – May 3rd

Not sure what to rent this weekend? Been hearing mixed reviews and want to see what we thought? You’ve come to the right place – see what we’ve been watching this week. We started the week with a review from Dale Harcombe, our Christian blogger. She saw “The Illusionist” and says it was a captivating film. Starring Edward Norton as the magician Eisenheim with Jessica Beil as his love interest, Dale highly recommends this film but says it’s not one for children. Sounds like something fun to watch after my kids are in bed . . . We also took … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – April 21st-25th

We had some fun here in Movies this week. In case you weren’t able to join us, here’s a recap of reviews to help you decide which films you might like to watch. We started the week with “Glory Road,” the story of a high school basketball team that won the NCAA championship with an entire starting lineup comprised of black players – the first team in history to ever break through that racial barrier. Their path was not easy. Many of the players suffered abuse and violence, the coach’s family was threatened, and everyone had to put aside their … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – April 14th-19th

Thanks for joining us for our Movies Week in Review! We may just be able to steer you toward a film you’ll really enjoy. We began the week with a guest blog by Dale Harcombe, our Christian blogger. She shared with us one of her favorite films, “A Man Called Peter,” the story of Peter Marshall. He was an immigrant from Scotland who came to America and started his own small church, eventually becoming Chaplain of the United States Senate, but his way was not always easy. The movie is based on the book written by his wife – Catherine … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – April 7th – 12th

I found some fun movies this week. Would you like to hear about them? First was the new DVD release, “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” These little guys have been around for a long time, but they’ve never had their own full-length movie before. When Alvin, Theodore, and Simon are brought from the forest in a Christmas tree, they find themselves being taken home in a food basket. Dave Seville, wannabe songwriter, is the owner of that basket and the house they proceed to trash. When he discovers they can sing, he writes a song for them which launches them all … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – March 31st – April 5th

Looking for something fun to add to your movie wish list? Here are some suggestions for you to consider next time you’re on your way to the video store. If you’re into classic musicals, you’ll want to take a look at “Strike Up the Band.” This movie stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in one of their collaborations and tells the story of two teenagers who want to raise money to go to an audition for their dance band. They put on a show to raise the cash, but it seems they’re running into a lot of opposition as they … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review

Or should I say, “two weeks in review?” We’re combining the last two weeks into one today, and it makes a fun assortment of movies to add to your “to be watched” list. We’ll start out with “Bee Movie,” the new film just released to DVD which was written by and stars Jerry Seinfeld. I was pleasantly surprised by the fresh idea in the plot, but curious why they chose to include a little bit of swearing in a film for families. I also reviewed “Autumn in New York” for the purposes of venting my intense feelings of dislike for … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – March 10th-15th

I saw some fun movies this week. Would you like to hear about them? First was “Just Like Heaven,” starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo. He’s looking for an apartment to rent and finds one, only to discover it’s inhabited by a ghost who refuses to believe she’s dead. It’s a fun romantic comedy that the guys will enjoy, too. “My Girl 2” tells us what happens to Vada Sultenfuss after the death of her good friend, Thomas Jay. Still living in the funeral parlor, she’s faced with death every day, but she hasn’t yet dealt with the death that … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – March 3rd-8th

I had so much fun watching movies this week! I’d like to share with you the highlights of the films I saw. I’ll be adding some reviews from the previous week, as well. “McLintock!” is a classic John Wayne movie and one of my dad’s favorites. Possessing one of the longest fight scenes in history, this is definitely a man’s movie, although there were elements of it I enjoyed as well, despite Maureen O’Hara’s tendency to overact. “Gypsy” is a Sondheim musical which tells the story of Gypsy Rose Lee, first famous exotic dancer. The show explores her past and … Continue reading

Movies Week in Review – February 18th – 23rd

It’s been a little quiet here in Movies this week, but every movie I reviewed was a winner–you can’t go wrong with any of my selections this time around. First, I really enjoyed “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Starring Will Smith as a man who can’t seem to support his family, try though he may, you’ll be inspired by our main character’s determination and drive. He rose above his poverty-stricken life to become one of the most successful stock brokers in our nation’s history. “I Could Never Be Your Woman” stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a mature television writer who gets tangled … Continue reading
