My Favorite Video Camera

I am fairly new to the video camera market. Which is not to say that I am a novice when it comes to shooting video. I spent more than a decade as a television news reporter and was trained to shoot my own stories during my early years on the job. Even when I moved to a larger market and was paired with a professional videographer I still maintained my interest in shooting. Of course, at work we were dealing with video cameras worth tens of thousands of dollars. Needless to say, since I had access to the professional equipment … Continue reading

Manual Focus For The Right Photo

Spring is finally here in West Tennessee. Flowers are blooming; my allergies are in high gear to prove it. The warmer weather always brings my family outside. One our favorite things to do in the spring is go to the ball field to watch our friend’s son play baseball. Of course I never go to the ball park without my camera. I noticed recently that my Nikon D50 camera had a horribly long delay in the auto focus that I was missing the action a lot of photographs. Normally I am quite lazy and want everything done for me when … Continue reading

Who Are These People?

I spent most of my weekend scanning old photographs for another slide show DVD project. Several years ago my mother in law gave me a large disorganized box of family photos. Two years ago during one of our rare snow days in Tennessee I found the time to sort through the photos and put them in somewhat of an order. I haven’t looked at the photos since the day I sorted them and neatly tucked them away in a box. This weekend as I pulled out the photo pouches from the box an overwhelming feeling of “Who are these people?” … Continue reading

A Trip To The Camera Store

Walking into a camera shop is definitely a kid in a candy store feeling for me. I was surprised for a Sunday afternoon the camera shop was actually very busy. Several people were picking up photos, a couple of people were sitting at computers editing photos and the counter staff was helping a few other customers. With the internet it is so easy to shop at home in my pajamas but every now and then I like to touch and feel the item before I buy it. Not to mention I can get the item the same day instead of … Continue reading

Slide Show DVD – Made My Mother In Law Cry

My husband, David finally sent the slide show DVD to his mother yesterday. One of the advantages of living near the FedEx hub in Memphis is we can ship anything and have it to its destination the next day. My mother in law received the DVD today. She called my husband at work crying. I knew it touched her to warrant a middle of the week daytime phone call. She told him she couldn’t believe that pictures would make her cry. My husband and I laughed for a few minutes that I was actually the good daughter in law for … Continue reading

Photo Slide Show – He Sat Down to Watch!

A couple weeks ago I finished creating the photo DVD slideshow of my husband’s photos from birth to graduation and I must admit it is awesome. I had spent the day before scanning 120 photographs of my husband. He wanted to pick out the music for the video so I had to wait a day on him to get it to me. I picked four Mercy Me songs which were very appropriate for my husband. The DVD was actually a late Christmas gift for his mother. Of course I was dying to show my husband and son the video as … Continue reading

Toddlers and Portraits

Any parent could really tell you most of this. Toddlers are pretty simple really. They are free willed individuals who are all about testing their limits and generally doing whatever it is you don’t want them to do. That is why they can make some of the most difficult subjects to photograph. The reason they are so difficult though, is really because we, as photographers, are usually unable to adapt to THEM. We want things set up a particular way, more specifically our way. Well, toddlers seldom want to go our way. Toddlers, from around 9 months of age all … Continue reading

Using a UV Filter

UV filters are probably the most common filters used. Not because they are necessary, but because they protect the lens from scratches and whatnot. Let’s face facts; it’s far cheaper to replace a $5 filter than to replace a $300 lens, now isn’t it? UV filters DO, in fact, serve a purpose. The first thing you have to understand is what UV light is and why you would even WANT to block it. Most of us know that UV light is what causes sunburns and suntans. We know that we use sun screen to block UVA and UVB light. Well … Continue reading
