Printing Photos from a SD Card

PictBridge technology may be a popular way to share phenomenal photos with family and friends, but it is hardly the only way. Another very effective and easy way to print frame worthy shots is through a card reader. These days you will be hard pressed to find a digital camera that doesn’t have the memory space to store at least a few thousand high-resolution pictures. However, if you want to move your cherished shots from your camera directly onto your computer without using cables, you’ll need a card reader. This is where a Secure Digital (SD) card comes into play. … Continue reading

Getting Freelance Work

Decent paying freelance work is a challenge to find these days, but it’s even harder when your work is not top notch. In order to earn a profit from your passion you need to have mastered the basics of photography including: composition, exposure, lighting and focus. In addition, it helps if you are proficient in photo editing and printing. If you are just starting out, it’s a good idea to secure internships with established photographers. If you went to school for photography, then finding real world applications for the lessons you learned in the classroom is a must. What’s more, … Continue reading

Photo Books: Pros and Cons

In creating photo books over the last couple of years, I’ve used several services (such as Snapfish and Shutterfly) to create and print. I’ll talk about each of these services and a couple of others in a later post, but for now, here are some of the pros and cons I have found with photo book services in general. Pros * When you’re done you have a nice compact book of your photos. * Most services that I’ve tried feature nice printing that lives up to expectations. * You can choose your size, cover, and layout to customize your book … Continue reading

Photo Books: An Introduction

There’s something really appealing to me about a professionally bound book containing my own photos, text, and graphics. Perhaps it’s the writer and wanna-be designer in me that loves seeing all my work printed and presented beautifully for others to see. These are just a couple of reasons I love the printed photo books that are becoming so popular these days. I did my first photo book a couple of years ago right before getting married. I wanted to show off many of the engagement photos we’d had taken, but didn’t want to have them in a traditional album or … Continue reading

Your Dad’s Photo on the Cover of a Magazine

If you are looking for the perfect Father’s Day photo gift then you’ve come to the right place. While some men are more willing to admit it than others I doubt there are many dads out there who haven’t dreamed of seeing their photo grace the cover of a magazine. Some dads would kill to see their faces on the cover of Sports Illustrated or Golf Digest (or in my brother’s case—-SURFING Magazine). Heck, I know some dads who wouldn’t mind seeing their mugs on the cover of GQ magazine. Regardless of your dad’s preference in periodicals there is a … Continue reading

Photo Printing Options

Judging by the line of people at my local grocery store most digital photographers print their photos outside their homes. It never ceases to amaze me how long people are willing to wait in line for the person in front of them to painstakingly go through each and every shot on store photo kiosks when they could be getting the task done at home. By using Pictbridge-enabled cameras and printers you can avoid the long lines at places such as Wal-Mart and Walgreens. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, PictBridge is the single printing format shared by the … Continue reading

Should You Invest in an “All-In-One” Photo Printer?

It’s a question I have been grappling with for a while. In shopping around for a printer that can do double duty for my photo projects and writing jobs I’ve noticed a few trends. First, stand-alone ink-jet printers are fading fast. Stores are now filling their shelves with “all-in-one” printers that usually combine a printer, copier and scanner. What’s more, prices for these multi-purpose machines have fallen so dramatically that you can usually find an all-in-one device for the same price as a single-function printer. In my mind I look at these all-in-ones and rationalize that I’m getting a scanner … Continue reading

It’s true, but the one photo item I really, really want is listed at the end of this blog. But, getting back to the photo printers… if you are an avid photographer who is all about instant gratification, then you likely find it hard to live without an in-home photo printer. For do-it-yourself photographers inkjet printers are the key to getting your pics ASAP. Fortunately, prices on photo printers have fallen steadily over the past few years. If you are in the market for one, there are three important factors you should consider before forking over the money to take … Continue reading
