Tips for Organizing Your Photos

There was a time when I enjoyed designing our family’s annual Christmas photo card. Back then all I had to do was find a single stunner, place it on the card and BAM!–done. These days, though, some card designs allow you to feature six or more different pictures. So many choices, so little time. This time of year I typically kick myself for not being as organized. I have a semi-method behind my madness, but it’s nothing to brag about. Whether you’re trying to get vacation, birthday, or wedding shots in order, it’s important to have a system that makes … Continue reading

Making a Montage

I still can’t get that viral time-lapse video out of my mind. It’s a mesmerizing masterpiece that speaks to the wonders of time-lapse photography. However, it doesn’t address the other options you have with the genre. In addition, to creating movies, multiple images can be compiled to create time-lapse montages as well. You’ll still need to use a photo editing software program like Photoshop to design the final image, but instead of piecing together a video, all of your images get stitched together to form a single photo. The object is to blend and fade multiple shots taken over time … Continue reading

Time-Lapse Video Goes Viral

Have you seen this trippy YouTube video which features time-lapse photography at its finest? A very attractive 20-something-year-old woman took a picture of herself every day for four and a half years, and then stitched the frames together to create an incredible time-lapse video. According to the woman, she snapped the portraits of her fine-looking self between September 29, 2006 and May 12, 2011. You can see all of the individual photos on her blog, and then watch as she places them in sequence to create the awe-inspiring 41-second video that will take your breath away. I have viewed the … Continue reading

Spicing Up Portrait Shots

Did you know Santa is taking reservations for portrait shots right now? According to an email I received from my local mall (on the day after Halloween), my young daughter can be one of the first to pose with St. Nick in all of his holiday splendor. You know, just in case we want to bypass the crowds that wind through the mall post-Black Friday. Needless to say, I didn’t respond to the offer. In fact, I’m not sure I will be featuring any traditional portrait shots in our family’s annual Christmas greeting this year. This summer I saw a … Continue reading

Going RAW

A Christmas tree lot was just erected across the street from my church, and it’s not even Halloween! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the leap from back-to-school to Christmas. After all, just yesterday I received a catalog from my favorite camera store that’s filled with “MUST-HAVE DSLRS.” Apparently, Santa can order from the company and have the picture-taking tools sent directly to your home in time for you to snap holiday keepers of your kids. As I paged through my now saturated with drool catalog I noticed that a lot of attention was given to cameras that have … Continue reading

Halloween Snaps

If you are like me, then you try to get the most use out of your kid’s Halloween costume as you possibly can. In my family that means frequenting Halloween events at the children’s museum, the zoo, school, the public library and other public and private venues. However, regardless of where your little ghouls or gremlins go to get their sugar high, frame worthy photo opportunities are lurking around every corner. If you are looking to snap keepers of your kids this Halloween, consider the following tips: Get Creative: Rather than have your Wolverine clad son pose stiffly next to … Continue reading

Challenge Yourself

SLR cameras are expensive, so it pays to make the most of all of their features. However, if you are upgrading from a standard point-and-shoot camera, then you might need some incentive to challenge yourself to experiment. Unless you are trying to profit from your passion, pushing yourself to use your camera to its fullest potential takes some encouragement. My advice is to look around at all of the subjects you can capture creatively with your picture-taking tool, and then work on your skills. For example, a trip to a nature preserve yields incredible photo opportunities. Professional photographers can make … Continue reading

Crazy for Color

Last summer I was trying to spice up my scrapbooks by shooting our vacation photos in black and white. Long story short, doing so made our trip pics look blah. Fortunately, I was able to salvage a bunch of my images by using photo editing software to add pops of color to the prints. You might know the technique as color splash photography. It’s all the rage right now and does a nice job of adding pizzazz to ordinary shots. The technique allows you to manipulate shades and tones to add drama and intrigue to a variety of photos. Whereas … Continue reading

Lights, Camera, Action!

Don’t let summer draw to a close without snapping some action shots with your digital camera. Take a break from posed portraits and start snapping action-packed images of your kids swimming in the pool or your partner running down the beach. However, before you wear out your finger pressing your camera’s shutter button, be sure to keep the following tips in mind: Aperture: Manipulating my camera’s aperture in order to stop action has been one of my biggest downfalls this summer. Using a low aperture will allow the most light into the camera. This is extremely important if you are … Continue reading

Getting Back to Basics

Sick of snapping photos with trees growing out of your kid’s head? Tired of capturing photos with missing limbs and blurry body parts? Then, it may be time to get back to the basics of photography. Rule of Thirds: This is one of the rules of photography that can be broken and still yield frame worthy shots. When it comes to composition, placing your subject dead center in the frame can create a powerful image. However, in most cases, you want to stick with the Rule of Thirds which recommends drawing imaginary lines on the camera viewfinder to create a … Continue reading
