Regis Philbin Signs Off

It will be the end of an era on November 18th when Regis Philbin does the final episode of “Live! With Regis & Kelly.” Philbin started the show back in 1983 when it was known as “Live with Regis & Kathie Lee.” That’s almost 28 years, but at 80-year-old, no doubt that Philbin is ready to retire and made the announcement today. He did however say the show would go on. Philbin’s retirement was first announced in January. At the time, he said, “There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially … Continue reading

Kate Gosselin’s Show Cancelled

Could it be that the first mom of reality television is seeing her 15 minutes of fame come to an end? TLC decided this week to pull the plug on “Kate Plus 8,” leaving Kate Gosselin showless. TLC tried to put a nice spin on the cancellation, releasing a statement which read, “By the end of this season Kate Plus 8 will have hit the 150 episode mark (including Jon & Kate Plus 8); an exceptional milestone. TLC hopes to check in with Kate and the family periodically with specials in the future.” So while the show has not been … Continue reading

MTV is 30 Years Old

Tomorrow is a very historic day for me. Not, it’s not my birthday, anniversary, or the day my son was born. Still, it would hold a significant place in my heart because at midnight on August 1, 1981, MTV showed its first video. You may be thinking this is somewhat silly, but back in the ‘80s, MTV and I spent quite a bit of time together. Memphis didn’t have cable in 1981, so I wasn’t intently glued to the television when MTV showed its first video. Any MTV aficionado knows that the first video played on the network was appropriately … Continue reading

Not So Happy Days

“Sunday, Monday Happy Days!” Well, maybe not so much for much anymore for the cast of the ‘70s hit show “Happy Days.” Four former cast members – Erin Moran (who played Joanie), Don Most (who played Ralph Malph), Marion Ross (who played Mrs. Cunningham), and Anson Williams (who played Potsie) – are suing CBS for merchandising revenues for which they believe they have not been paid. The actors had a deal with CBS that if their individual likeness was used on anything, they would receive 5 percent of the net proceeds. If they appeared as part of the group, they … Continue reading

The End of an (Oprah) Era

It’s been all over the news – next week is Oprah Winfrey’s last show. Well, I doubt it is her last show, but it is the last episode of her highly successful “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which has been on air for 25 years. Twenty-five-years? Do you realize there are grownups that don’t know life without “The Oprah Winfrey Show?” Anyhow, it is a big deal and while the media has been talking about it every since Oprah announced the retirement of the show, this week, the frenzy is palpable. Who will appear on Oprah’s last show? Actually, we don’t … Continue reading

The 2010 Academy Awards

I look forward to the award season all year, with the cherry on the top being the Academy Awards. However, this year’s ceremony left me feeling like “Eh.” The hosts were James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I have read that these two were chosen to bring in a younger demographic. While they are young stars and very good actors and beautiful, they aren’t the greatest Oscar hosts and I am being nice with that statement. I think James Franco, who is adorable, was literally phoning in his hosting because he had his phone in his hand a couple of times. … Continue reading

From The Real World to Congress

I used to be a devoted fan of MTV’s “The Real World.” I missed season one, got addicted during season two then devotedly watched seasons 3 through season 15. After that, I only sporadically watched (of course, I didn’t miss season 20 – Hollywood!). It seemed the show became less about the real world and more about kids who had grown up with the show acting like they thought the viewing audience expected them to act. Over the years, some of the people on “The Real World” have turned their 15 minutes into a longer pop culture run. For example, … Continue reading

Screen Actors Guild Awards

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony was held tonight. The SAG President Ken Howard talked about the hopes of merging of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ernest Borgnine. Borgnine has 200 titles listed on his Internet Movie Database page, including such iconic films as The Wild Bunch, From Here to Eternity, and The Dirty Dozen. He also won an Oscar in 1956 for his performance in Marty. As for television, “Boardwalk Empire” won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a … Continue reading

2011 Golden Globe Awards

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was back again last night, with the show that kicks off the award season – the Golden Globes. Often viewed as a predictor of eventual Academy Award nominations and wins, the Golden Globes is a glitzy, if not more informal event. The big winners last night were: Christian Bale – who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his role in The Fighter. Colin Firth – who won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in The King’s Speech. Paul … Continue reading

Country Music, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the CMAs

The Country Music Association (CMA) awards ceremony was held last night and if you watched the show, you might have been surprised to have seen Gwyneth Paltrow perform. After all, it is more common to see Paltrow on the big screen than at a country music awards show. But, she wowed both the audience and country music stars as she sang “Country Strong” in her first live singing performance. The song she sang is the theme to her upcoming film, Country Strong. In the film, Paltrow plays a country singer who is just out of rehab and trying to make … Continue reading
