Preschoolers Need Lunchboxes Too

At least that’s what my daughter maintains. Long before we started counting down the days until her first day of kindergarten my young daughter insisted that she needed to have a lunchbox. Mind you she was not enrolled in school at the time. She simply could not resist the aisles upon aisles of colorful lunchboxes and bags we passed at practically every store during the months of August and September. Last year when the back-to-school items went on sale I finally gave in to her pleas and bought her the Hello Kitty lunchbox she had been drooling over for weeks. … Continue reading

Does Your Preschooler Use a Backpack?

Does a preschooler really need a backpack? My preschooler got my mom to buy her two backpacks when she wasn’t even enrolled in school. Bottom line: Kids like bags. Most preschools in our area offer classes three times a week. The kids are in school for three hours at a time and don’t leave with homework. Therefore, backpacks are not required for class. In fact, after a recent incident where a preschooler brought his dad’s gun to class in his backpack, many preschools banned backpacks all together. Still, some preschooler’s insist on toting a bag to school, so they can … Continue reading

Is Your Preschooler Stuck in a Lunch Rut?

Do you have a picky preschooler who will only eat chicken nuggets, French fries and the occasional grilled cheese sandwich? If you answered yes, you are not alone. Millions of young children get stuck in a food rut and refuse to eat anything but the same items day in and day out. To help broaden your preschooler’s palate, experts suggest inviting your kids into the kitchen and letting them become active participants in meal preparation. By allowing your kids to have ownership in their meals you may be able to convince them that there’s life beyond peanut butter and jelly. … Continue reading

Calming a Preschooler’s Fears

Can you really blame four-year-old Hana Saldate for following her mom around like a puppy dog all day? In March the preschooler kissed her mommy, Euna Lee, goodbye thinking she would see her in a few days. Sadly, it would be more than five months before mother and daughter would share a hug again. The story of Lee’s imprisonment in a North Korean jail touched many people’s hearts, but none more than her preschool daughter Hana’s. The little girl had no clue that Lee had become a pawn in the increasingly antagonistic relationship between the United States and North Korea. … Continue reading

Preschoolers and Car Dangers

If you needed another reason why you should never leave your preschooler in the car alone, here it is: Police in the United Kingdom are calling 5-year-old David Law a hero. What’s more, officers say the fact that the young boy is alive today is “nothing short of a miracle.” Last week, the preschooler jumped out of his mother’s moving car in order to escape a deranged lunatic, who stole it while David was still strapped in the backseat. According to reports, the boy’s mom parked her car outside of her son’s school to check on term dates for David. … Continue reading

Preschoolers and “Sleep Unders”

My preschooler recently got an invitation to her fist sleepover. She was thrilled. Mommy, not so much. Initially I had reservations (my main concern was driving across town to pick up my daughter at 1 a.m. when she decided that she missed sleeping in her own bed), but after a few discussions with the host parents, I RSVPed “yes” and now whole-heartedly share my daughter’s excitement for this childhood rite of passage. Well, kind of. I was fine with the idea until I started blabbing about my decision. Apparently, there’s a huge number of parents who have strict no sleepover … Continue reading
