Creating a Reading Nook

I love children’s books as much as my children. I love the imagination, creativity, innocence, wonder, and transportation to another world even one where animals talk and have afternoon tea. Books bring a sense of wonder and if you select the right book the words can be mesmerizing. I love the way words sound as they come together to form a beautiful thought. Books are magic. It is the magic I want to share with my children. Further, I want my children to enjoy reading on their own. The best way to encourage an emerging reader is to make reading … Continue reading

Should Your Child Attend a Formal Preschool?

Recently the question was posed by a teacher on Facebook asking when a child should start formal education. The answers varied from two years old to not until Kindergarten. Some responded that formal education was never necessary. Obviously from the vast array of answers the decision to send a child to preschool is a personal one. How do you make the decision? Certainly do not make the decision based on pressure from family, friends or society. You will hear that children who attend preschool are better prepared for Kindergarten or better prepared for social situations. Is that true? You will … Continue reading

Yesterday, Tomorrow, and The Other Day

One thing that is so fun about having a child this age is their perception of time. They don’t really have much perception of time at all! They hear phrases from us like, “give me two minutes” or “Just a minute” and they don’t really know what that means. Trying to explain to your preschooler about an event in the future is equally as hard. We are taking a trip next week, and I’ve been trying to explain to my daughter that the trip is still a week away. Every time we get in the car, she asks me if … Continue reading

Reading, It Just Clicked!

My daughter has got it figured out. No, she can’t read perfectly just yet, but she is DYING to be able to read. It all started about a month ago when she came home from preschool and told me a boy in her class could already read. I responded saying that she will learn too, very soon. She just has to keep practicing her letters. Then, it was like one day it just clicked! She just figured out that letters made sounds, and put those sounds together, and voila! You have words. So, now she is unstoppable. She wants to … Continue reading

Is Your Child Fair?

A new study has come out recently stating that preschool aged children have a sense of fairness already. Even children as young as three years old are willing to share with other children, and work together to accomplish a task that will benefit everyone. Is your child fair? I think about this a lot with my daughter. She is almost five, and about to embark on Kindergarten, and I want her to be kind, and sharing, and fair. So, if she most likely already has a sense of fairness, the question is, how can I get her to recognize when … Continue reading

Get Ready for Kindergarten

Now, that my daughter is in preschool, kindergarten seems years away. But, in reality, it is only a few months down the road. This will be my first child entering Kindergarten, so I didn’t know much about the process of getting her enrolled for school. After talking to a friend yesterday, I had a little panic session. I live in an open-enrollment school district, meaning that I can apply to enroll her into any kindergarten classroom in the school district. Preferential treatment is always given to people living within a school’s boundaries, but it does leave some room for some … Continue reading

Preschoolers Love to Grow

Have you ever let your child grow something in a cup? This can be a fun experience for both you and your preschooler. Last week, my daughter had “Alaska Week” in her little preschool. They learned about all things Alaska related. One of the things they learned was about the state flower, the forget me not. She came home with a little cup of dirt and was very excited to show me what she had. She made sure to tell me that she had to put it somewhere very sunny, and give it plenty of water. I have to admit, … Continue reading
