Fall Travel for Frugalistas

The key to saving money while you enjoy a fabulous fall getaway is to visit places that allow you to get the most bang for your buck. For example, if you are planning to take a road trip to pick pumpkins or apples this autumn consider visiting a larger all-inclusive establishment. Some orchards and farms offer you the chance to not only pick your own produce, but also provide hayrides, food samples and access to petting zoos (complete with pigs, chicks, rabbits, sheep, cows, and more) minus the extra charge. Mackey’s Orchard in Belvidere, New Jersey, offers customers a 20-minute … Continue reading

What To Do This Weekend

What are your plans for the weekend? Many movie fans are counting down the hours until Oscar Sunday. Will Oscar virgin Sandra Bullock win gold? Will Oscar history be made with a win by Kathryn Bigelow? If you can’t get enough of the Academy Awards, but can’t afford a trip to Los Angeles to sit on the sidelines across from the real red carpet, then consider a trip to New York. The Big Apple is hosting a marathon screening of New York-centric Oscar winners from “Annie Hall” to “The Godfather” through Sunday at the Walter Reade Theater. In addition, in … Continue reading

Weekend Wanderings: The Dallas World Aquarium

A few weeks ago, I lost a very good friend and since that time, I’ve made a new commitment to living life and to stop putting things off for another time or a so called better time. As a part of this commitment, my daughter and I have become weekend wanderers and we’re determined to explore our local area and visit the attractions, see the sights and learn what we can. So this week, I am introducing you to what I hope will be the first of many Weekend Wanderings. The Dallas World Aquarium Located in the West End, The … Continue reading

Don’t Forget the Travel Snacks

Of course, every car, van, and truck today has a place to set your drink, whether it is a can of soda, a plastic cup, or a travel mug for tea or coffee. Finding a cup or mug and a car with a matching drink holder is a whole other subject, so we will leave that for later. However, I wanted to talk about edible items that we can carry in self-preserved bags, you know, the small items that fit perfectly in a purse or even in a pocket when traveling. If you are a parent of small (or even … Continue reading

Cow Parade visits Boston

What fun. The cow parade is in Boston from now until September 5th. Come see over 117 life size cows painted by local and national artists. Okay I’m tempted to say silly things like, the Cow Parade moos to Boston. In press releases they call them Bovine Beauties, which they are. If you need more encouragement to come out and visit these friendly heifers, go onto www.boston.cowparade.com You will see photos of many cows, Cowtucket, John Hancow, Sacred Moonument, Mooflower, Moo-rathon Runner, MooEngland Beauty to name a few…But moreso, you can read artist’s blogs which I found fascinating. The cows … Continue reading

Watermelon Festivals (Coming To A City Near You)

Do you know any good watermelon recipes? Our local grocery store is currently selling entire watermelons for $1.50. I bought three. I’m not sure why. My husband and daughter don’t really like navigating around the seeds, which means I am now desperately searching for unique dishes that incorporate the refreshing fruit. (In retrospect, I realize my purchase was fueled more by the price than our collective love for the fruit.) So what am I going to do with 10 pounds of watermelon? Throw my own Watermelon Festival? It’s not such a bad idea. During my search for watermelon recipes I … Continue reading

Botanical Gardens–A Wonderful Day Trip… And So Much More

They are destinations for gardeners… and for those who don’t even have yards. They offer inspiration in the summer and peace in the winter. What’s more, they are located in just about every city in North America. They are botanical gardens and they make for great family day trips…and much more. Our local botanical garden is quite a gem. At just over 47 acres it is but a mere shadow of the massive botanical gardens in New York, Chicago, and Ontario, yet it celebrates the relationship between plants and people just as well. It captures the beauty of Northeastern Wisconsin’s … Continue reading

Day Trip–A Game with Meaning

This day trip really won’t take the entire day. However, I feel compelled to share it with you in hopes you will take advantage of the opportunity. It’s a chance to witness the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” A chance to watch friendly competition between players that you may be surprised to see hitting the hardwood. And a chance to reflect on how much we take for granted. These opportunities were presented to me when I was invited to take a trip to watch a weekly basketball game at our county’s Association for Retarded Citizens Community Center. … Continue reading
