Movie Popcorn? You Might as Well Eat Lard

At least, that is what a new study seems to suggest. Movie popcorn, the kind that you get in the movie theaters has changed little in the last fifteen years. It is still pretty bad for you. I have to confess that I am not a big movie popcorn fan. I had been away from the movies for a while. Then one afternoon, my husband and I got to actually go to a movie. We ordered a tub of popcorn. A few minutes into eating it, we felt ill from the artificial butter. For those of you who do love … Continue reading

Do you remember those print ads in the magazines that show a glass of milk with an hourglass figure? The implication is that drinking milk can help you to lose weight and be fit. In fact, there is another study that has found this link to be true. (There are also other studies that have shown unclear results.) Upping your dairy intake may help you to lose weight. The most recent study was done at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. For 12 weeks, researchers followed participants who upped their dairy intake from three to five servings a day. Chocolate Festival Sabotage

I just learned that there will be the 1st annual Chocolate Festival nearby in a couple of weeks. They are featuring an “All You Can Eat” Chocolate Buffet. Hmm, do I dare go? I have to go because I have never been to one and I have to see what it is all about. There are going to be demonstrations, activities, and raffles as well. This should be interesting. Actually, chocolate has a lot of good in it, but for a dieter eating chocolate can make you lose your “mind over matter” motto. Every once in a while, especially if … Continue reading

Overweight in Alabama

Every so often, I see a news story that just brings me up short. This one caught my eye today. Apparently, the state of Alabama is trying to crack down on obesity by hitting its employees where they live – their pocketbooks. That’s right – if you work for the state of Alabama and you’re overweight, you’ll soon be paying $25.00 more per month for your health insurance as opposed to the employees who are not overweight. This adds up to $300.00 more per year. The state is calling this a financial incentive to lose weight. I haven’t decided yet … Continue reading

Meals Make Me Sleepy

“Why do I feel so tired after a meal?” You know, I used to ask my doctor the same question. She told me there was no reason I should be tired after a meal unless I was either overeating or just not getting enough sleep at night. I remember exactly how I felt about her after she so easily dismissed me and I guarantee that I won’t do that to you! You may be overeating, but if you’re trying to lose weight that scenario is doubtful. (Personally, I can’t imagine why anyone would read my blogs if they weren’t trying … Continue reading

What is Metabolism?

We talk about metabolism all the time, but how many people really understand what metabolism is and how it affects weight loss? Skinny people don’t necessarily have a higher metabolism than those who are overweight. Metabolism is actually the label for a process. Metabolism is the process of converting food (or beverages) into energy. Your metabolism is your biochemical furnace. Those who are overweight generally have a very energy efficient (or very well supplied) furnace while those who are thin either have an inefficient furnace or simply do not fuel it. I dare say we’d all be grateful for an … Continue reading
