Celeb Goes Overboard to be “Green?”

Okay, I am all for conservation. I am willing to do my part. But, when Sheryl Crow suggested I use only one square of toilet paper in the bathroom, I was a bit put off. I mean seriously, who is she to be telling me how much toilet paper I should use? Ask me to cut down – that is fine. But to dictate how many squares I should use? She came out later to say it was a joke, but honestly, sometimes celebrities are so arrogant and self-righteous, I just wonder!

Now another celebrity has come up with a new “green” idea. I read a blurb on the Internet Movie Database that actress Cate Blanchett has stopped washing her hair. She said that since she does not wash her hair, she only needs two minutes in the shower. Dang, the only inspiration I needed to cut down to a two-minute shower was to have a toddler. After all, I worry what he is into and two minutes is about all I can stand in the shower before I jump out to view the damage.

Blanchett even went so far as to purchase 30 timers to give out as stocking stuffers. What prompted her to decide to quit washing her hair? She recently visited Lake Samonsvale, an area north of Brisbane, Australia that is drought stricken.

I can understand her concern, especially as a mother. We all want to save as much of the environment as we can so our kids will have a great future. I am just not sure that teaching your children to not wash their hair in an effort to conserve water is a good idea. I know supermodel Jerry Hall says her hair looks better if she avoids washing it for a few days, but to say you have stopped washing your hair – ew! I don’t know about you, but the heat index here has been above 105 the last couple of days. Even inside the house my head is getting sweaty and funky!

Blanchett did have a few other good ideas on conservation. She said she now turns the water off when she brushes her teeth, rather than letting it run. She is also limiting her car usage and her household runs on green power now.

I think the environment will probably change, no matter what we do. After all, it has been changing for millions of years. Do you think the dinosaurs used aerosol hairspray to bring about the Ice Age? I think what some people don’t take into account is that we usually learn to adapt to our environment, not matter what it is. Change is a part of life – even for our Earth.
