Forget about the traditional tie and golf ball gift set this Father’s Day and give dad something a bit more personalized. My 6-year-old suggested giving Pops an Aluma Wallet until I explained the idea behind customized gifts that can be made from felt and googly eyes rather than crush-resistant material.
If you have younger kids who still get excited about crafting homemade presents, then consider the following easy to make Father’s Day gifts:
Sports blanket: Help your kids piece together a no-sew fleece blanket for dad that features logos from his favorite sports teams. Pops can use it while he watches the big game in his garage man-cave or bring it along while he tailgates.
Snack pot: Instead of parking a cooler next to his recliner, why not make dad an attractive snack pot complete with utensils, napkins and treats. Simply purchase a terra cotta pot and a little plate that will fit under the pot. Next, get the kids to paint the outside of the pot. They can spell out dad’s name or just cover the entire pot with dad’s favorite color paint and embellish with stickers, glitter or sequins. Finally, fill the pot with napkins, utensils, condiments and some handy snacks such as beef jerky, trail mix or peanuts. Dad can place the pot next to his recliner and enjoy not having to get up for treats while he watches TV.
Dress up: If you don’t want to make dad’s entire gift from scratch, then dress up the gift’s wrapping with homemade touches. For example, you can use craft paper decorated with painted handprints. Or, have kids write “I Love You Dad” with various writing tools, including crayons, markers and colored pencils. Another simple idea is to glue Xeroxed copies of favorite family pictures to plain wrapping paper and use it to jazz up dad’s present.
